have a chance to get 2003 jetta tdi w/auto trans. It works now but has had some overdrive issues, but car is cheap(belongs to my brother). I don't like autos and have read that the 2003 auto isn't dependable. Is it feasible if it goes to replace it w/a 5 speed stick? thanks
you need pedal cluster, gauge cluster, ecu, hydrolic brake mc res, clutch slave cyl, clutch/pp obviously, axles, center console forward section, shift cable box/cables, rear motor motor mount, drivers trans mount, and then you have the wiring, you can just jumper both clutch switches and the cruise/starter will work (cant remember if wiring is present, never taken apart a mk4 auto dash), and you need to over ride the starter interlock thingy for the auto gearbox.
Then you will have imobilizer problems, I recommend you purchase an imobilizer-defeated ecu at this time, infinite expensive headaches can be avoided.
but you will have an 11mm pump!
so, yes it can be done,
is it worth it?? eh, I would do it, but I wouldn't do it for anyone else. lol.well, maybe for a lot of money.
thanks-I hadn't thought about all the collateral stuff. PIA definitely.
Might be worth looking at a 6 speed if you are going through all the trouble anyways
thanks, I'm not doing anything yet but looking at options for worst case scenario
Actually it depends how mechanically inclined you are. Its not as bad as was stated though daunting for a novice. Immobilizer isn't a problem if you leave cluster alone, it will have prnd321 but they will just be there non functional. Your best bet is to find someone parting a smashed one and buy a 5 speed swap kit. You can go 6 speed but would be 2000+ a 5 speed swap can be done for under 1k if your thrifty. There are many threads around on it search Kill da wabbit and you should get some good info even some parts lists including the little stuff. On tdi club they even have a few folks selling 5speed swap kits in classifieds. I'm going to be doing a 2001 nb auto to 5speed swap in a couple weeks, i just need a few more pieces(cluthc pedal and linkage), but i am super thrifty and if the pick and pull doesn't have what i need i usually wait!
