I would love to have one myself, but I have too much junk and projects. My dad had many and loved them too. Let us know how it works out for you.
I have too much junk and projects.
I do to.. I didn't really expect to end up with it.. Typically when I see one of them pop up somewhat closeby they are in far worse condition for far more money.. I bid $375 with expectations of going for around $600, kinda forgot about it till I got the email saying I won..
Guess the Rabbit will wait a bit longer now.. At least the price of scrap is kind of up.. Looks like I'll be hauling some junk out in the next few days...
I can't believe it..........
Well, it's clean... drop a LS1 into it and go terrorize Honda fanboys.
so, is it gonna stay 5.7 diesel powered?
or hot small block powered?
that would be prime for swapping one of the new duramax motors into...
It's staying a 5.7 diesel for now... But if the diesel becomes an absolute abortion the backup plan may be to dump a small block in there and either terrorize the neighborhood or sell it... A duramax swap would be sweet, but those engines are still a bit pricey for my blood..
I feel that the 5.7 can be a decent (albeit slow) engine.. Talking with my parts guy today he still has a set or 2 of head studs and gasket sets from back in the day.. Translation - I'm gonna be gettin a hell of a good deal on them..
I'm hoping to go pick it up on Sat.. I'll finally get to see what kind of mess I bought in person.. IF the thing will actually run I may yank the heads right off and take care of that before I start to drive it..
Studs first Brett
don't need a repeat lol. How do the 5.7's respond to boost??

Are those the diesel motors that are basically a gasser bottom end with a small dose of stupid compression thrown in there?\\
And I never knew those cutty's (sp?) came with diesels in them! That's a pretty sweet car!

Yes and no.. Much like VW and Mercedes diesels, they are similar in design to the gasser engine (which was the Olds 350), but have a heavier crank, rods, and block..

Cuttys, Montes, Grand Prixs, and Regals all got em.. As well as all the full size cars.. It seems as though they are most commonly found in the full size Olds and Chevy cars.. I guess when you were spending for a fully loaded Ninety-Eight back in the day the few extra bucks for a diesel wasn't such a big deal.. OR maybe better said, it wasn't a big deal till it blew up the third time...

No questions about it!! Head studs for everything!! (I even have a set in my golf cart!)
Turbos are a PITA, but I happen to know a gentlman that has done it.. He used a modified setup from a 6.5.. With ARP fasteners all over and the heads redone properly they will handle up to about 7-10lbs pretty well.. Going much over that prepare for head gasket trouble unless you drop the compression....
His '82 Caprice wagon has lived almost 150K miles towing stuff with 7lbs.. He also has a Cutty Supreme with compression dripped to about 20:1 and 18lbs of boost.. That one is a warm weather car only I guess..
