Changing the headgasket on my 1.6TD this weekend. Engine is from a 92 jetta and i have a few questions that i couldnt seem to get answered from searching, or i just suck at searching, most likely the latter.
1. whats the difference between 11 and 12mm heads? I always hear about these 2 sizes and no idea what that means... How do i tell them apart?
2. I remember hearing the gas 8v head studs work for some diesel motors, which would those be? how would i determine if they will work for me?
3. Since i will have the head off i might aswell do the 1.9TD metal headgasket, do they have the same tolerance groups for the different notch sized gaskets? ie: my 1.6 firbe gasket has 2 notchs, will the 1.9td 2 notch metal gasket be equivalent to the fibre gasket? of course i will be measuring the protrusion anyways.
4. whats a good method to clean the old gasket material off the head and deck of the block, i have used razor blades to get as much off but i just want to clean them up a little more beyond that. any recommendations?
How do i determine which gasket i need? i measured the protrusion on all cylinders, do i add them all up and divide by 4 to get the average?
I get 4.0mm when adding them all together and a average of 1mm, does that mean i would order the 1 notch for the 1.9td aaz?
I thought i read somewhere that the 8v arp headstuds work for the diesel engines. I have the 204-4203 kit brand new from when i had my gasser. these wont work for my 1.6td im guessing?

Nope, the tallest one wins the day. Imagine if you had 1mm, 1mm, 1mm, and 5mm. If you averaged them you'd buy a 2mm, and the piston that pushes up 5mm would bottom out.

They work for the earlier diesel's (77-82ish).. After that they went to the larger 12mm bolts... For 12mm engines you'd need the 251-4701 which are listed for the Ford Cosworth 2.0..
