can i use g50 vw synthetic tranny oil in my golf tranny? same stuff i used in my 96 gti vr6 02a tranny, factory stuff. dont' mentio nredline, won't go near that snake oil (tried it in the gti, made 3rd gear grind, grabage.)
I'm pretty sure you can. I have a 94 Golf TD and the owners manual says to use G50 (I think that is GL-4 rated). I am using Amsoil S2000 75W90 though (GL 2-5 rated), and the stuff is real good. After I put it in I picked up about 3 mpg or 6%.
Good Luck

what did you have in before you put the amsoil in? extra mpg is always a good thing

I'm not really sure what was in there because I only bought the car last year in August. I asked the previous owner if the gear oil was changed and he said yes. He also said that he added a little bit ATF which would make the transmission shift better. But the guy was a mechanic at a Mercedes dealership and he was German as well (came from Germany a few years ago) so I was pretty sure I could trust the guy to have used the right fluid.
When I drained the old stuff it smelt really bad. I put in the Amsoil sometime in March and then changed it again at the end of April to wash out all the crap out of the transmission. In march, when I first changed to Amsoil, I checked my mileage on the next tank and it went from 39mpg to 42mpg.
Take care

VW specifies that you need a GL-4 transmission fluid in your 020 transmission. I don't know whether the VW g50 fluid is GL-4 rated or if it's the correct viscosity.
What redline oil did you put in your 02A transmission - MTL or MT90? I seem to recall that MT90 is the correct fluid for 02A transmissions, but I've never owned an 02A transmission, so have never tried it. MTL is the correct fluid for 020 trannies, and I run it in every 020 I've got and have got repeatedly excellent results (easy shifting, better MPG) with it.
i beleive it was the mt-90, can't remember, was years ago, would have to find the receipt for it. i won't go near redline now.
teh g-50 i have here says 75 w90, vw specno 501 50
im using Valvoline75w-90 synthetic but i think its gl-5 oil. How bad will this hurt the tranny. Ive used gl-5 in my audis and seems to be ok. What the difference in gl-4 vs gl-5
