Just purchased a 1987 Turbo Diesel for commuting (its nice to have a diesel Jetta again). According to the seller it doesn't have (or intermitently has) cluster lights for night time driving. Is this something that I can access to replace without a lot of difficulty? Is there a common spot that might reveal a loose connection?
Thanks for your help,
Tim
Seeing that it is a 1987, I am going to say they are the same small lights that came from the factory 23 years ago

The dash fascia has to be removed so the cluster can be removed to give access to the small light bulbs on the upper back of the cluster. They will be a little 1.5w bulb and will look similar to the bulb in the upper right of this picture;

and be in the location of the two holes at the top of this cluster;

The bulbs twist out of the cluster and then pop out of the holder. Shouldn't take more then an afternoon if you've never had the dash out before.
Thanks a lot Jeremy. It is nice to be on the forum.
Hey man no problem! Welcome aboard!
Got any pics of your ride?
YOU CAN GET LED'S HERE :www.meistergaugefaces.com
you can get led's basically anywhere. Just solder a 200 ohm resistor to them and you're golden. Check your polarity of the LED's before you solder them though.
I changed mine to LEDs for about $2 and 10 minutes of careful soldering and cutting of the contacts.
40,000 millicandella and up is plenty
see my post in the FAQ and jeremy's post for the awesome red LED's
All be it you'd save about $20 compared to using that site GEE-BEE linked which isn't exactly massive savings.
plug and play is really easy and nice if you don't particularily like tinkering and you just want it different. I like those black light ones Gee-Bee. I wonder how well that would work on an mk2 cluster without that white background.
Iam doing new white gauge with tach , Blue led's to match my 800.00 mcnally gauge setup on my console...
This stuff is still cheap to me....

Wanna send some $$ my way GeeBee? lol I would love to do my car over with the best of the best, and its awesome you have the ability. If one can get the same results for a fraction of the cost.. You gotta remember, we do drive cars that are more than likely worth under $1000

not all of us have money falling out of our pockets tho...
Its sad but I bought Cluster lights on Ebay for 2$ shipped.
And Gee Bee, I looked at their stuff before, I find it looks like ***. I could probably print somthing off the compuer too look better then taped on Gas Gauge Lines.

And like Jeremy Said, Not everyone has a ton of money to throw at a car. We aren't all trying to build show cars and can import parts from all around the world.
If you can do that All the power to you, But for the rest of us we think Cheap and Easy.
They Want $300 for that?? omg. thats disgusting that they would even attempt to sell that.. I'd give maybe $10 for what Catlin has pictured.. I sure hope what you get is better looking then that..
hah !
My wife has two job's no problem !
I just sit around and design stuff, I added eighteen new item's to Aircraftspruce.com catalog this month.
I have two new Toyota products coming, and it looks like Cessna is going to start building fifty new aircraft per month...
I only want to do things one time...
