AGS trans vs ATH

I have to drop in another trans into my MK3 AAZ, came with a ATH , first one blew a diff rivet & made 3 holes in the diff housing!! Bought another from a wrecker & it lasted 2 months then the shifter gizmo on top of the trans locked, up solid no in, no out, no back, no forth, weird!!! So I have a chance to pick up a AGS trans out of a NA MK2 for reasonable money, ratios not perfect but about 10% higher rear end. Nothing much around here for less than $400. So what is the deal with 90mm flanges or 100mm flanges. Can I swap these or what. Looking for a cheap solution for a broke student. Comments please?? Cheers Dan

flange swaps are very possible.

I just replaced the transmission in my 95 gasser Golf with one from a 92 Jetta and the only thing that was slightly different was the length of the "shifter gizmo". It already had the 100mm flanges but I had to take the passenger's one off to get it past the motor so changing the flanges isn't a problem. If the AGS has the big reverse light switch you might have to do some rewiring to make them work. I would have liked to found one out of a diesel to use but it blew on the weekend and I already had the AUG transmission all cleaned up in the basement.

you dont have to remove the flange to get it off the engine. i never have atleast. only time i take the drive flanges off is when they absolutely have to come off. they are kinda a *** to put back on when you have a trans with the springs and conical washers in it.

I've never had to take the flange off on the MKII cars but I tried for hours and couldn't get it to go in with the flange on. Maybe it was because I was putting it in alone lying on ice in the snow that I was having a hard time. It was definitely a pain getting the flange back on once it was in the car too.

i always pull the engine to do trans work. i hate trying to muscle a trans up into a car. because when the engine is hanging right in front of me, i can just pick the tranny right off and walk away. installation is just as simple.

#1 There are flange compressing tools sold for the job of getting th circlip off the output shaft. I think mine was made by AST tools.
#2 Next time, instead of removal of the flange...unbolt the trans and rotate it before removal.

That's how I've always done it but it would hit something on the backside that would keep it from rotating back up in place. I plan on replacing it with a transmission from a Diesel for better gearing so hopefully I'll have better luck next time.

that AGS you were looking at would have been every bit as good as a real diesel trans. for alot less money usually.

I think that's what I put in my pickup, out of an early A2 Jetta D. 5th isn't tall enough, until there is a hill anyway.
I had a 7A that was awesome with a turbo diesel.

i like my ACN very well, i like that the first 4 gears are close, but not as close as a AUG or 9A or something like that. 4th in my ACN is like 5th in my AUG. the jump from 4th to fifht is big, but not as huge as a close ratio with a tall fifth.
