Just purchased car . New at diesels .Starts quick but smokes and runs rough cold. Grayish blue then blue when warm doesnt seem to use oil. 228000 km Injectors removed and cleaned,new fuel filter. Slight exhaust miss. Any thoughts THANKS
Injection timing could be retarded, or one or more bad glow plugs. If the symptoms persist after warm up then timing is the more likely problem. These engines are bad for loosening the crank bolt and stripping the key in the crank pulley, worth checking for while you're setting the injection timing.
Glow plugs were tested with test light individually and could be seen glowing when i had injectors out .
Yea, check the timing, and find out whens the last time the timing belt was changed (good time to change it). Could be some sticky valves too... I had that on my car

Blue smoke, when cold or hot engine means burning oil. 80% that oil rings are worn.
Before you spring for a ring job, make sure that your valves are properly adjusted.
A 93 passat will be a 1.9TD, they have hydraulics, good tip for older engines though. With only 228000km on the clock I seriously doubt oil consumption will be an issue. Timing is still the most likely problem. If the timing is retarded enough for the engine to miss there will be a sizable amount of blue/white smoke.

I don't understand one thing here, blue smoke means that oil is burning, right? Ok, what timing has to do with oil getting into combustion chamber? If timinng is off, oil can't get into cylinders nor it should.
Only two things can be wrong here, valve seal or seals or cylinder oil rings.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

No, blue smoke could be oil burning, or diesel NOT burning. The whitish blue startup smoke is often unburned diesel. It should go away when the engine is warm though since it combusts completely. Unless the timing is too retarded.

I see. My mistake I guess.
If your timing checks out and you still have a smoke issue do a compression test and a leak down test to follow that if need be. If all checks out there it is likely your valve guides, vws are famous for having valve guide issues.
