TDI superior at building more HP than IDI?

was peaking into the TDI forum and those guys look like they are running big numbers.... 180hp
is it just me or are they making more power with roughly the same mods?

Hp pretty much means nothing to a diesel engine. Plus look at what those TDI engines are in. mkiv mkv... Those cars weigh in at like twice the weight of a mk1? You can easily go either route her Fork Man
Not on a tight budget will help you out a lot. Do you like to wrench on your cars? This will kinda determine what you choose. A TDI will be able to make more "Power" more reliably then a IDI.. like think.. if you push a 1.6td to make 150hp thats over a %100 increase in output that it was designed to withstand. There is a reason the 52hp 1.6's go for a million miles, they were built strong, and there is very minimal wear at 52hp.. everything is just kinda havin a good time
nothing is reallly working for it, you know? once you start to push it is when you start to lower the reliability of things.
What do you want from your car? to be fast? How is the suspension? and all the bushings? without that, a quick motor will not be able to be enjoyed other than in a straight line. lol even the 52hp with a suspension done to the tits will be a fun ride.

its got crap suspension now but id like to have it sitting on coils once i get the engine finished for it.... yeah i hear you on the reliability issue... the tdi's were already ~90hp stock

Good things my friend good things
I don't have too much knowledge about TDI's as I prefer IDI's lol.. but essentially a M-TDI is a TDI engine with Direct Injection and a mechanical fuel pump much like the IDI's. I believe the only gain over a normal TDI is that you don't have a Computer for the fuel pump, and thus making it much easier to swap in to say.. an MK1

I just did a little bit of research on the TDI and M-TDI engines..
I mean they are great engines to begin with, and even better once modded. But for a swap in to a car that it did not come from? high priced and essentially not worth it. From what I read... you could easily Get the same amount of power and fun from a 1.9 AAZ swap, with a Giles pump, good size turbo and Intercooler for a fraction of the cost.
Do some research on it. 1.9 AAZ IDI is what i'd do if I had the money

Better budget for a rebuild if you're buying from him. The AAZ I bought from him needed a re-bore and new pistons. Caveat Emptor!

The advantages of a TDI over a mTDI is the electronically controlled variable timing vs the linear timing of a mTDI. Also, with the later mTDIs you also have the VNT, which is able to provide boost at very low RPMs but not be restrictive when boost is not needed. There are methods of controlling VNTs without a computer though.
The disadvantage of the TDI over the mTDI is the electronics. MAFs, wires, ECUs, all that stuff breaks and most of it isn`t cheap. Plus if you want to turn up the power you have to get a tune, with a mTDI you just turn a screw

I still kinda regret that i didn't go the TDI route with my transporter, however for the price i got my 1.9 na and the time and energy it would have taken to do a TDI [and given a chance NOT mTDI , I'm not afraid of electronics] it's just fine the way things worked out . All to say that with the couple of modified turbo diesels i've driven or owned, the most impressive with the least amount of effort was[were] TDI's. I'm always on the look out for a wrecked jetta with an ALH for cheap.

Yup, just remember that whatever you buy from the ebay link you showed is risky. There have been several of us online here that have not had good experiences with his "good, used" motors. My 1.6 had to be completely stripped and rebuilt from the block up, it was already 2 oversize on the bore and was sold to me as an engine with about 70k miles on it. I think he's selling cores claiming them to be good used engines basically. Occasionally you might get lucky but it seems that typically that's not the case.

I had a bad turbo on a AAZ from him, he gave me credit for a replacement
It did have a new belt on it from him , and I installed a new water pump and pulled the head to check it out..
He's close so Iam not worried..

Just come to Canada and buy a complete MK3 Golf or Jetta. They all have 1.9AAZ TDs and can be had complete and running for 500$. At least that way when you strip it down you have all of the little 'gotcha' bits that cost a fortune from the dealer.
