Good price for a complete AAZ w/100k on it?

I am looking into purchasing an AAZ from someone locally. The guy who is selling it gave me a very brief breakdown of info. He said he has had it for 3 yrs and in that time it has been in a storage unit untouched. The guy he bought it from worked at NGP at the time and he told him that it came off of an economy Jetta and has roughly 100k on the engine. I asked for pictures and got two rather crappy pictures, but it does show that it seems to be complete (other than a missing alt). It does appear to be rather dirty. Now I'm not sure if that is from it being in storage for 3 yrs w/its current owner and who knows how many yrs with the past owner, or if it's possibly oil. It does have hoses attached so hopefully the dirt has been kept out of them and the engine itself.
Since the guy is local to me I will be able to pick it up and avoid outrageous shipping charges. If I were to get it I would at the very least change the oil, glow plugs, timing belt, and water pump. Any other suggestions?
AND the most important question of all: What do you all think is a good price to pay for a complete AAZ w/supposedly 100k on it (locally picked up)?

OK...since I've had a bunch of views and NO responses I'll shoot out what I think is reasonable...but you guys have to let me know.
I was thinking around $800 for a complete engine locally picked up is reasonable.
What do you guys think?

Condition of turbo would tell me about everything, take it off and inspect it..
belt's etc.

Happened to me , I pulled he turbo gave it to him and deducted 400.00 off the price

In my experience AAZ's aren't that common on the east coast, so you may pay a premium. if it is the Eco model it is lacking the LDA on the pump, which means no extra fuel under boost. Fixing that will set you back a few hundred for sure. I learned this the hard way. A diesel with 100k on the clock still probably has a lot of life in it. I paid a dollar a cc for mine with no known history and I believe that was fair. I think $800 would be a steal for a complete engine with pump and turbo assuming nothing is cracked or warped.

when i went to buy my engine, i had never looked at a vw diesel, reallty didnt know what the hell i was looking at, but i did take the intake hose off, and to my surprise, there were NO BLADES ON THE COMPRESSOR WHEEL! haha, anyway, the guy knocked 50 bucks off the price, so i picked up an 84 MF for 250 bucks.

yeah, but you are in the PNW. there are VW's and MKI's galore up there. The southeast is a whole different story completely. A diesel rabbit in good condition will sell for $3,000 down here. I imagine Maryland is somewhere in between your feast and my famine.

So how do you tell the difference between a Eco Model 1.9 and AAZ 1.9? I'm looking at a 1994 Golf from Canada with a 1.9 TD, how do I know what it has in it?

I was told the eco versions were very base model AAZ's....no power steering and no A/C. So if you don't see either than it's probably an eco model. Power wise it should all be the same.

On the top of the injection pump sits a fuel enrichment device called a LDA. Its appearance is often likened to a space ship. It should have a nipple on it with a hose running to the intake manifold. if it does not and it is just a flat piece of aluminum screwed on it it is an Eco and the LDA is empty, which means no extra fuel under boost, which means power wise it is far from the same.
If you search LDA or anything about pump modding on here you are sure to find pictures and way more info on it.

+1^^ If you can get it for under a Grand, you stole it, even if it needs a rebuild. Giles will charge $250 to convert to a real turbo LDA if you send him your pump for a performance rebuild. I found that one out the hard way too!
Just pull off the intake hose at the turbo to inspect the compressor wheel; if the blades are deformed or if you can push-pull axially on the center nut and feel a lot of play the turbo is suspect. Check security of the crank pulley, and condition (presence!) of timing belt...that's all I can think of without taking parts off the engine.

No such thing. All mk3s have power steering and AAZs only came in MK3s and Passats (which also all have PS)
AAZ eco pumps and true TD are tricky to differentiate between. There are many different variations of the eco pump. If it has a nipple on it then it is almost certainly a true TD pump.

I also had someone post in this thread (which that post is no longer here...don't know why, but anyway) that there is a difference in the power between the eco model AAZ's and the regular AAZ's. Something about extra fuel delivery under boost?

That part is true... the eco AAZs have what amounts to a NA injector pump, there's no LDA, and no (or very little) fuel enrichment under boost. I got saddled with one of those, I had to have the LDA added to the pump to use it as a true turbo pump that will let me dump as much fuel in as the motor can process.
