Volvo 245 D24 Smoke.

I have had this vehicle for a few months. I get lots of smoke from a dead stop shifting through the gears. Just wondering if this is typical. Any other Any other VW powered Volvo drivers with some insights? After I get my Rabbit on the road I plan a Turbo engine, but for now I am driving NA.

the max fuel screw is probably screwed way in. either turn the fuel screw out a little, or boost it to burn all that extra fuel.

After my Caddy project is on the road I plan an engine swap with boost. I will give that fuel screw a try. I may also try retarding the pump a bit. I previously messed with the internal pump pressure before verifying the timing. Can't undo that with out a tester.

why would you even mess with a pump without checking the timing first? and messing with the internal pressure at that? thats like doing a headgasket job when its your rod bearings that are bad.
only retard the timing if it sounds really really rattley. my car rattles alot, but its timed by ear, but runs very well.

What color is the smoke? Could be rings, hg, pump...need more info.

My main reason was lazyness I guess. Retarding the timing should correct it, but it had the same smoke issues before. Just as you It was timed by ear, but then I timed it with the dial indicator to spec. Still don't know if it was in time to begin with because I replaced the timing belts in the process. Now that I know it is in time I can back it off 5 thousands and see what that does. Spent the weekend re-wiring my tail gate. Got a wiper now, and rear window defogger now.

Smoke is black. Does use some oil (about a quart every fill-up or 400 miles) Mostly at highway speeds (65-75) She is probably a bit tired. Still looking for the turbo version of this engine, which I will overhaul, so I am not too concerned at present about the oil consumption.

dude, you dont need a turbo version of an engine to make it turbo charged. they never had a VNT 1.5D, but guess what, i have one! you dont need squirters for a turbo. i havent melted any pistons yet. im running lots of smoke too. and a quart in 400 miles is getting a little excessive if you ask me. gray smoke is oil if its warmed up. black smoke is always un burnt diesel.

May not need the extra oiling in the short term, but I sort of lean toward VW/Audi for longevity. Anyway from what I have found on car-part, complete engines are cheap enough. Harder block and crank plus the extra oiling, and boost too. Im going for the engine. Besides I can drive this one while doing a good job overhauling the turbo motor. Hopefully I will get some time soon to finish the Caddy, and I can drive that.
