Can static timing affect turbo boost

Just installed a Giles modded pump in a 84 1.6TD motor and added a boost gauge. The car runs great starts fanastic (5 seconds of glow plugs) but does not seem to have any boost. I set the timing at .95MM but had to re do several times to get it to repeat the same setting when rechecking. Anyone experience this? Forgot to mention that the motor ran fine befort the pump rebuild but could not see boost due to no gauge. I can hear the turbo spinning up though. it is a KKK 24??.

What kind of load are you putting the engine under when you are checking for boost?

Where do you have your boost gauge hooked up to?

Boost gauge is hooked with a t in the line to the fuel pump from the intake manifold. Tried going up a long hill with the pedal down to the floor. Blow into the gauge line and see the needle move so the gauge works.

Well if you can hear the turbo spinning up I'd think there's a good chance you have a boost leak somewhere. Maybe check the short coupler hose to the intake for cracks or splits? I guess a stuck open wastegate would be a possibility too, but that would probably stop the turbo from spinning up enough to make noise.

Checked hose and it is fine, no cracks. Is there a way to check the waste gate? I sense no one thinks timing is an issue here??

If it's starting right up and running well then the timing shouldn't be effecting the boost. If you are way off on the timing and the engine is running like crap, then yeah you aren't going to get proper boost.

What is the best way to check WG? Use a borascope through exhaust?

what kinda turbo you got?if its a KKK, it unbolts off the turbo. if its a T3 it has a shaft and an actuator on the outside of the turbo if i remember right. you can just pull the down pipe usually.

It is a KKK but I am afraid to turn the 3 bolts any harder as even with PB Blaster and heat they don't budge. I guess easiest way is to pull the whole thing but did not want to do that just yet. If I do I will bead blast and lap valve. Just bought another TDI that had a loose cam bolt and spending time reseting the belt to see if I won the game or do I have to pull the head. Owner claims engine died with no noises just seemed like it slowed down. I got the bug bad as this makes 5 diesels now and growing.

those 3 bolts usually come right out. they are just way tighter than they need to be. mine were too. thought i was gonna brake them off, but they just came out.

I bought a rebuilt T3 ast winter with a bigger compressor wheel which they call a stage 1 and I put it on and it made very little boost, 5 is the very highest even with the turbo pump on. I put the old original 432,000 mi. T3 on the engine after I'd lapped the valve and I have gotten 10 so far and I have a N/A pump on it {T/d was leaking}. I kind of feel the valve on the rebuilt turbo was never actualy lapped but otherwise looks brand new. To remove the valve on them you have to just about destroy the actuator and I know now he never had it apart and I think the valve probably leaks a little. The actuaor was all rusted away on the old turbo so I just cut the rest of the can apart, lapped the valve and put it back together without a working actuator and since were talking such low boost numbers I don't see the need for one anyway. The Stage 1 turbo did have a louder whine to it though with the bigger compressor wheel but made little to no boost at all. I'll probably lap the valve on it too this winter and give it another try when I get the T/D pump working right.

GOT BOOST !!! Used a bore a scope and found a piece of carbon under the valve. had a tough time hunting around but was a whole lot easier then pulling off turbo. thanks for all the help!
