Which direction should I go in my gradual GTD buildup, 1.9TD or TDI?
I want to keep away from anything electronic so I tend towards the 1.9TD but have seem some posts recommending the TDI with mechanical pumps.
Want to know what the experts would do
BTW it's a '92 A2 Jetta
Thanks,
Hugh
The 1.9TD is very straightforward swapping to enginemounts and plugging in the sensors, fuellines, coolantlines and some powerlines (starter, injectionpump).. the TDI is much more complicated, even with a mech pump (if you can find a good one for a reasonable price) not to mention the difference in cost.
I agree with Maarten, a 1.9TD setup will be straight foward.
Laurentian, you should come to the Julep tonight, we gather there every tuesday.
Right now, there's only 1 mechanical TDI setup here in Quebec.
The engine itself without the electronics is very reliable, you don't worry about that.
The problem is performance.
Finding a pump with variable timing is the challenge right now.
He tried a few setups (twice with a 12 mm that he blew up) but all of them except a stock 1.9TD pump worked out.
He's running the 1.9TD pump for a while now, with no intercoolers and bigger nozzles (Smog 216's).
The car is not very fast. I followed him home once and my big passat was able to pass him....
He's supposed to get a new pump, so we'll see, but for now the performance are similar to a 1.9TD... :?
Thanks, I'll try to make it some time soon, this week too much work!
I'll be seing smog soon for overhaul of my 1.6D injectors.
BTW I noticed you picked up what is called a blue monster RammS.
I thougth so about the 1.9TD being easier to build up!
Think I'll go that way.
Too bad, a buddy of mine offered me a rotted out A3 TD cheap but I let go. Oh well, maybe another deal will come along soon.
Later,
Hugh
May have a good 1.6TD lined-up!
What can be done to the 1.6TD other than a basic rebuild
to increase performance?
I came across a member here from Finland some time ago
who installed bigger valves on the 1.6TD head.
Any input appreciated.
I am now leaning towards the 1.6 due to lower cost
of parts and ease of build-up.
Thanks,
Hugh
Use the search, there are A LOT of topics about tuning
