As we all know, there seems to be a lot of VW diesels up in Canada. What if any ramifications or complications are there at the border if you are towing a purchased car from Canada back into the US? The possible scenario would be me taking my personal vehicle w/a tow dolly to Ontario and buying a Canadian car (For parts only) and towing it back across the border. Please note, I do not intend on driving the vehicle in the states, I only want to use it for parts.
Your best bet is to talk to US customs before you go, tell them what you want to do. I think you'll find you're better off bringing back parts rather than a whole car. IF the car was available in the states with that driveline, less problems, but you may still need to prove it passes US safety and emission standards.... Don't think they'll make a distinction between a driver and a parts car. You're in Indiana? There should be a customs office in South Bend, or maybe in Fort Wayne. Give them a call. Maybe you could find someone up here to help you spend a day ripping apart a car to get all the parts you want out of it...... Maybe Tyler (burn your money) or Dr. Diesel?

yeah call customs or the border crossing where you will be crossing at. If it's older then 15 years it's a lot easier. I think ebay motors has a bunch of info on the subject as well
i was kinda wondering about this as well. I would think I would be able to bring a mk2 td down into oregon thru washington because of the age, but I guess I need to look into it more.
Take the VIN tag off your current mk2 (or a junker), plates and current registration.
find your car and swap on your VIN, plates toss the registration in the glove box and drive on home

Done that one before...Working on one car and had one with no papers. swap the VIN tags and plates
