Any reason why I can't take the uncracked precups from a junk head and use them in place of the cracked precups in my good head??
Good cups are in an 81 head, good head is an 85..
tried this,
mechanical and hydraulic head precups are different. Dunno what that does as far as your years mean.

Good catch in terms of something to watch out for, otherwise no worries. Some folks remove them prior to refinishing the head.
Once you get the new ones installed you might want to consider peening them in place.... the Search will point you to some good threads on the subject.
Oooh never gave the mech vs hydro thing a thought.. Thanks for that heads up! Luckily both head I have are mech...

Already on top of that!
I;ve never had a VW diesel head apart before but I've noticed the one's I have sent out have come back with the cups peened in there.. Argh so used to just being able to send the head to the machine shop and get something back looking shiney, new, and ready to go.. IF they weren;t backed up for the next few months this would be soo much easier...
Hopefully they will have my block done in the next week or to
