What kind of car is it? Year, miles etc. Prof rebuild tranny? Does it have a warranty? How is the fluid level?

Simple process of deduction would lead me to believe the car is:
A car with "indirect gasoline injection" and an automatic trans...
I am guessing a CIS BMW, like a 1990's 5 series?

when vehicles with automatic transmissions rev, but don't move (in gear), its usually that the fluid is low, or theres been a catastrophic failure in the system. even with low fluid it should still move a bit, but have a very time engaging gears. if you've noticed a big 'bang' or 'clunk' while driving it, then its most likely toast. if its been getting worse and worse, you probably just have a leak. the transmission coolers on many vehicles are known to let go, and mix with the engine coolant (coolant exchangers are a popular method of cooling, and help warmup the engine quicker). if this happens, even driving only a few km's will cause some damage, if not ruin the whole transmission.
yep, you should have went with a VW, but not vw automatic!!!
take some pictures for good measure, and i'm sure you'll get some good responses. this car isn't your daily is it?
oh and i guess theres another scenario... which would include one of your driveshafts 'falling apart' which is VERY rare, but would render the car immobile unless you had a diff lock or similar device.

I wish it was a BMW LOL, 2001 Mazda Protege ES 2.0L, Automatic, Prof rebuild just over year, no warrenty. Yes it is my Daily Driver. The Trans Fluid if fine, and its not leaking, no snapped axels...Major Issues is those auto's where always a problematic tranny. I've had it for just over a month and put close to 4000KM on it. (travel alot), According to the scanner, the Shift Silenoid is Stuck on...I most likely will just scrap the car,
How Hard is that to fix???

It's a shame it's not a 5 speed, my friend got a 96 a few years ago for next to nothing with a bad head. I put a rebuilt head on for him and that thing will do 37 mpg on a trip he makes to Kentucky a lot. It's just a standard 1.8 with a 5 speed.

the motor is at 260,000km, the body is in need of over 1000$ in work, and need 2 front control arms. the speed is smashed in the fron but its rebuildable, and only has 80,000km on it...i think i can use my doors and that lol

There's a very good chance the solenoid is stuck on because there is something stuck in it.. Something that probably shouldn;t be floating around in the trans anyhow...
To get to the solnoids on that you have to drop the pan and I think they are on the bottom of the valve body.. Can;t remeber if you have to drop the entire valve body to remove them... I don;t know why I think you do...

amen. sorry to hear about the transmission though. the clunking and high rate of speed are not a good combination. maybe the solenoid 'clunked' ?
my dad's dodge caravan was making some weird noises (he was towing with it ) so he brought it to the dealer... couldnt' find anything wrong with it. told him the solenoid makes the noises and that its fine. so on the highway 4th gear blows. fearing that they might just do a quick fix to 4th gear and leave him a bad tranny, it drops to 3rd... floors it bang, drops to 2nd, bang 1st, big bang  suffice to say that the transmission was totally fubared and they HAD to give him a whole new unit

he added a nice big transmission cooler to it, and never had a problem since (yea since it got stolen  ) too bad you're not in the same boat
the electronics in the new transmissions are pretty complicated. sometimes it can just be that there is corrosion on some of the wires, but i'm doubtful that you'd be so lucky.

Well Mazda Protege Automatics are known for being faulty, since this car already went thru its original, and 2 rebuilts...i think its f***ed. I'm never buying an automatic again to much work...lol...I miss my Golf

Never had these problems and i could torture the car and it would still be fine...
