YEAH! those are soo cool, a buddy of mine has one on his 83 diesel rabbit.
No idea where the PO got it from though
sorry.
They really help keep the engine compartment cleaner! by a fair amount too.

I am thinking about building a big skidplate out of the roof sheetmetal from a junk rabbit, doubles to keep the oilpan safe and the bay clean

Yes it will work well to keep the bay clean.. but being sheet metal.. won't it be even more susceptible to damage then the oil pan itself? What about some heavy gauge STEEL? add like 300 lbs to the car.. no biggy
Maybe if you severely reinforced the area around the oil pan and trans.. the sheet metal would hold up quite well.. sounds a good idea! make one for me too?

I am going to build a frame out of tube that will be the structure to take hits, and lay the sheet under it as a flat surface to slide and keep out dirt and road grime.

A plastic pre formed one would be great. light weight.

indeed, but my build os primarily for offroad and rallycross, so I want something a little beefier than plastic(that and the roads up here suck)
if I were building a street car I would be super interested in the plastic ones however.

Full carbon fiber underside belly pan. With scoops to pull air through the engine compartment and directed to the outside of the car not under for better handling/cooling! ha

Well, yeah. My Eco originally had one. A little more quiet...but so what!! All of the oil and other dips your car drops is what you get to carry. Plus all the dust that manages to get in there.
My liner was in the dumpster with the first oil change. Never looked back.

Seriously, the theoretical (at best) savings could never soften the practical annoyance of having it there. Just my take.
To make up for the loss, I vow to walk one day every three months!

If I could find one I would snag it up.
Anything you can do do improve airflow is a good thing.
I'm one of those guys that likes engine covers though. All my friends are telling me to yank the cover off my 1.8t so you can see the engine, I don't want to see the damn thing. That cover is also insulated (quieter).
Anyway if I could find one I would have it.
On the other hand I received a phone call on the way to work today from someone that has cash and wants my car
Now I'm all upset.. I should have never listed it.
