I thought I had read somewhere that there was a way to check the timing without going thru the whole dial-indicator-in-the-IP process... I know a standard timing light deal (like a gasser) doesn't work b/c there's no ignition.
Am I remembering wrong??
Various manufacturers (Snap-on, etc) sell timing-light adapters that bolt to an injector hardline and allow you to use a standard timing light.
There are no marks of the flywheel specific to this procedure, and specs on what the timing should look like using a timing light are rare. And the adapter is a bit spendy. However, unlike the dial indicator method, using a timing light compensates for pump wear... so once you get the method dialed in it's probably superior in some ways.
Thanks Vince. For my purposes it sounds like an effective dead-end. I guess that's okay, since if you're going to check timing, you are probably going to end up having to move the pump, which means taking stuff off (cover, etc.) anyway.
If it was more straightforward, it could provide a crosscheck of the "normal" method...
