Will the alt from an AAZ have a W terminal to run a the tach in my jetta? i'm looking to ditch the a/c and would like the serp set up(if i could find one) while i'm at it. I tried the MKIII 2.0 set up and no dice due to the brkt hitting the pump. I'm guessing they are all over Canada.
if the alt doesn't have the W terminal, it shouldn't be too hard to hook it up. i think Vince's site has instructions on how to do it.
How do they run the tach on the AAZs?
How do they run the tach on the AAZs?
Yes, there's a W terminal on the AAZ alternator, although the harness is a bit different.
More importantly, the serp pulley is a very different diameter, as is the serp harmonic balancer... so I suspect the MK2 tach would need significant recalibration to be accurate, since the alternator RPM will be quite different.
I was afraid of that. But i would much rather have the serp setup than 3 different v-belts. oh well i'll find one and do the leg work. I've slightly read over the tach write ups. Guess i need to get a serp setup and recalibrate the tach, might be a good time to get a gasser tach for higher revs. ha
Found these: But the same thing with the alt running the tach?
http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3871186It seems the 16V guys use a TDI crank pulley to offset for the wide timing belt. So I would guess us IDI diesel guys would too.
Also they have the ABF non ac brkt that keeps the Alt out of the way of of their crossflow heads intake ports. So thats good for our injection pumps. Problem is 16V stuff is expensive and ABFs are from overseas.
I would like to run my power steering off the the serp too. A few guys have found diff pumps that have a better offset from AEG MKIV 2.0ls. So i guess it'll be quite the hybrid set up.
Not sure but might need to mod the crank snount to run the TDI pulley so it doesn't fail like the AAZs have been known to do. But i might just use a TDI bottom end and throw an AAZ head, pistons at it. If my 1.6 block and pistons are to far gone
MKV TDI crank pulley, 16V non ac brkt from ABF, VR6 water pump pulley, AEG P/S pump, and i'll have to figure out the alt. May need an AAZ alt so i have the W terminal, or Might have to use the ABF due to the mounting then have it modified to run the tach.
foxracer, have a look at this thread.
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=12589.0Issue was an AAZ engine + alternator, with a W signal led to a 1.6 TD tachometer. Tach was over-reading because of the different pulley ratio for the AAZ alternator, and the tach's factory adjustment screw did not allow enough range to get it right.
Fairly simple solder job with new resistor, and it's all golden now.
Caveman followed my suggested resistor mod to the tach, and reports that it worked like a charm for him, too.
Hey thanks. I glanced over that thread before i had ever thought of having an aaz in my car just didn't remember to look back.
