• i just finished doing the head guasket and timing belt in my 96 td 1.9L jetta. it kinda runs but hesitates a lot then runs for a bit putting out a lot of white smoke. i was told it was the fuel injection pump was timed wrong and as much as i play with it it doesnt do a whole lot.

• I just did the same on my 92 1.6TD, MHG, timing belt etc... on a cold start it will blow out alot of white smoke until it gets warm, then it runs just fine.

• How long has this been happening Geoff?
  
  Could be as mentioned either the timing is off and/or there is some antifreeze in the exhaust. The later would burn off after a short drive though and not return.
  
  
  
  EDIT; Is this a TDI or an AAZ 1.9?

• Sounds like timing. Based on your description you have a single piece pump pulley right?

• Timing and/or air bubbles would be my guess as well.
