I have a saab 900 all aluminum intercooler and need to mount it in my vanagon. The trouble with the location behind the drivers side tail light is that My van has A/C so line comes right down through there. And I am retaining the A/C so any other ideas of how to mount up the I/C?
I put a volvo fmic on my 87 4runner w/td engine and i mounted it as low and up front as i could.I took some old bodymounts and masde tabs out of stainless straping and bushed a bolt with the mounts. If you dont have space you dont have space.smaller ic may be your answer, theres real tiny new chinese ones on ebay for cheap.there are suspose to be quite effiecient.bar and plate as appossed to fins.
I have to cut mine in half and double it up thickness wise. I know someone with a tig who said he'd do it with me so im lucky but i've heard as much as 300$ to get that done by a allum. welding shop so I dunno what your options are. I've heard of people putting them in like body panels and just routing air through it like on a z28 how it has those nostrils after the front fenders. you could put it anywhere if you run air through it somehow
That would be a lot of plumbing as the engine is in the rear on the vanagon. Im just wondering if it would get enough flow on the underside of the body somewhere? FMIC would be Ideal its just that it would take some 20+ feet of IC piping to get to the engine.
oh yeah ... i wasn't thinking a bout that....
Hmmmm
a unique roof rack?
Use 2" radiator hose and alum. piping or 2"conduit maybe.something cheap.I cant see using 50 ft of stainless.
You might also want to ask this question over on the Vanagon diesel forum at
www.vwdieselparts.com... lots of Vanagon gurus there and I know a couple have given a lot of thought to intercoolers.
Long long intercooler pipes = long long turbo lag btw.
maybe it would work to pipe it over t the other side of the engine bay. Or maybe reroute the hose from the A/C dow the other side.
What would be SICKKK is if you had it come up through the floor and it went into an AC controlled system where it had a sprayer and freezer like conditions and a fan to blow through it. Liquid cooled intercooler!
with a vanagon it's not completely rediculous;y out of the question, however ... very very unnessiary
Well I was thinking of using a windshield washer setup to spray it with but I need to get it mounted somewhere first.
