I am doing a swap in my car, I'm putting in a 1.9 IDI with 200,000km on it. It seemed to run fine, you could hear the turbo whistle inside, and didn't smoke...Since I am the pro at blowing cars up...What Should I watch for in this motor, What should I do to make the motor last since my poor golf's 1.8L gas only lasted me not even 10,000km before I lost one piston, blew the rings, fried the started and coil and cracked the block...All in 1 shot...
how did you manage all of that carnage to a 1.8 gas??? i've driven those motors pretty hard myself and have never had an issue (7k rpms) as long as there was good oil inside... and even when no oil it still didn't die (but wasn't driven hard)
look at getting the crank nose fixed first if you want the motor to last.
Change the timing belt NOW and at regular service intervals. Use DIESEL motor oil, get the injectors tested. And if you mod it, get an EGT gauge.
I blew the Oil cooler gasket in Halifax and while at the shop waiting to see if i could get it in to fix it my gf got a call and there was an emergency in her family so we left without fixing it, (small oil leak) i drove for 5 hours at 160 to make it back home...I crack the block...I blew the rings on 3 pistons(one wasn;t working from the time we left) the car stalled at one point and trying to start it i burnt the starter and coil and lost all power about 3 days later...there was oil on the air filter...the car only had 153,000km on it...you can give me a tank and i could kill it...
