i have a 87 golf n/a 5speed today i was spraying down the motor (it was real dusty) and i realized that there is a hold at the top of the transmission if water got in there could that damage my trans? i know that hole is not where you add fluid but it seems to be open im not to sure what its even for?
Dan:
That hole is for lining up the crankshaft timing mark. There should be a little pointer mark on the aluminum case inside that hole (looking toward the engine). Inside of that case will be your flywheel/clutch assembly, and on the outside would be an alignment mark, that you would align to the pointer mark inside of that hole. It is used for timing timing camshaft, injection pump, or when changing the timing belt. If you look closely, you will see that inside the hole, there are threads. There is supposed to be a plastic threading plug to keep crap from getting in there and possibly contaminating your clutch. I would suggest going to the wreckers and getting one.
I hope that helps, if I missed anything, I am sure someone will add to this.
it's a 27mm allen head style plug that takes a lot of effort to remove. I personally don't have one on my car because I had to chisel it out
thanks a lot guys i got not even a tea spoon of water i took it for a drive it feels fine i just wanted to make sure mine dose have the plastic cap just a hole in the middle of it but it seems fine thanks again dan
There's a plastic plug for that hole in the middle.
A little water isn't going to hurt it. Might rinse it out a little.
It'll all just drain out the bottom.
ya i guess im missing that plug all have to go to the wreckers and find one thanks guys
