N/A air cleaner substitute Mk I on Mk II

I will soon be putting a rebuild back into an '85. I hate the early Mk II air cleaners (those with a total of 6 clips). I want a later Mk II air box base and face (total of 4 clips), but don't have access to one in my area.
Question: will a Mk I n/a intake manifold and attached air box clear the back wall in the engine compartment in the Mk II?? As I look at the scenerio, it seems like the Mk II engine sits just a little farther rear-ward in the compartment. I am not sure the bend in the original Rabbit manifold will clear.
Otherwise, I may opt to use long stainless hose clamps. I'm not at all worried about the appearance. Just trying to give my new engine clean breathing!!!!

gas intake and cone filter, easy and better than that air box and you can make a tube to suck cold air from somewhere away from the engine, i know a couple people that have done it easy!

Or gasser intake with a TD air box, or gasser air box I suppose
As to the original question, I'm not sure, I've never tried.

Bump, as I am trying to avoid unnecessary clutter.
I've got at least one gasser manifold that I could use like that.
Don't really want to do it. Part of the attraction of driving these is the bare-bones appeal. I like stuff simple and to the point.
Please don't get me wrong....of course, I am thankful for the responses.
Original question stands.

everyone can agree with simplicity, i guess thats why i like the gasser setup but good luck with finding that plastic box

does anyone know what's wrong with putting the gasser mani and a cold air intake run to a cone filter? Would that be a upgrade in performance or?

I think I've got a spare MK2 air pickup assy (minus the goofy insulated tubing). PM me if interested. I know I have two, but I'm not sure if one is bad. I'd like to keep one for a spare, so if both are good, then I'll sell the other.
