I went to Canadian Tire and asked for a fuel filter for a 91 1.6 diesel Golf (don't know exact year of my engine) and I think they gave me the wrong one, it's a stubby one, about half the length of the one that's on the car now. The one that's on my car now looks similar to the one that was on my 93 Jetta AAZ. I suppose I should return the one they gave me and get a 93 AAZ filter, just to make sure I get one that's the right size.
I have never bought an aftermarket fuel filter for a vw that was worth ***. I had a fram that lasted 1000Kms. Only bosch, mann or other oem suppliers.
I've found that my local C-tire will try and sell you a gasser fuel filter instead of the diesel one, because they don't stock it. I think Car Quest stocks one
Just what BurnYourMoney said... gasser filters are often sold instead of the diesel ones and they fit the description you gave.
Also, stick to Bosch & Mahle
I returned the wrong one and got a Bosch filter, yes, from Canadian Tire. Made in Spain. I suppose it can't be too bad. Next up will be an oil change and coolant flush/fill.
