Hi there,
I have an 81 diesel Caddy that is running good but I would like to replace the engine with a 1.9TD down the road. A friend at work has a 94 Jetta TD he's selling cheap but there is one concern I have and that is the glowplugs are stuck. The VW shop he goes to said the head would crack if they attempt to remove / replace the glowplugs?! Should I be concerned? If I do buy the Jetta, I'll drive it for a bit but will part it out to fund my Caddy project.
BTW, my Caddy has 288,xxx km on the 1.6 NA whereas the 94 Jetta TD has 320,xxx km. I might be better off just keeping the 1.6.
TIA!
Never heard of glowplugs cracking the head. Injectors, yes, but not glowplugs. They would probably be easiest to remove with the engine hot, like removing the injectors.

Actually he was told the block would crack, not the head which I thought was odd. I agree, injectors would make more sense. I'm meeting up with him today to have a thorough look at the car. If anything, I should have everything I need for my swap.
Thanks!
how would the block be cracked when removing the glow plugs? i would think that the glow plugs themselves would crack before the block... especially since they are in the head
best to spray them with some kind of penetrating lube over time and then remove them while its hot like jimfoo said. if they're in there really good you might have to remove the injection pump. when installing new ones be sure to put some anti seize on the threads to avoid this problem in the future

Yeah, I had my doubts as well when he mentioned the block would crack if the seized glowplugs were removed. The glowplugs are in the head, so I figure the so called "VW shop" gave him a line. It's all very comical now that I think of it.
Anyway, I'm seeing him in a few minutes.
Thanks!
Dont forget the glowplugs are kinda hollow.
Watch out for head cracking while removing 10mm plugs that are hollow!! LOL! Be careful of the engine block too..
Well, I had a good look at the car. It's definitely not worth his asking price of $2500Cdn with all the rust, dents, bondo...etc. Even if I did buy it for the engine, the rest would be difficult to part.
What is the going price for a 1.9TD with tranny anyway? I missed out on a running 1.6TD Rabbit last week for $400.

check with the autowreckers ..... you will find it is about 2500.00 for a running low millage 1.9 td engine in good shape
