I've never seen this before and i even asked at the 2 dealers that i know. I 've just seen 2 different Jetta's whose odometers rolled back by them selves at 300,000 kms. One was a 96 TD and the other is a 98 TDI, both of course with digital odometers. I had an arguement with the first customer because he was trying to sell the car to a friend of mine and he was claiming that they all do it ??!!. My old 98 TDI is now showing 329,000 and i sure know of plenty more that have tons of milage showing. Has anyone else heard of this.
The early MK3s roll over at 300,000 for sure.. I have one myself and know of many others.
My understanding is that the OBD1 cluster (1993-1997ish) rolls over at 300K and the OBD2 cluster (1997ish +) does not... but that's just an explanation I got from one source.
So, I can't explain the 1998 TDI you've seen that rolled over... unless it was a specific model weirdness and/or someone swapped clusters. Cluster swapping is pretty common on MK3s it seems due to various issues and repairs being very expensive, if even possible.
Okay i believe what you say, but how does that explain all the other vw's i've seen with more than 300,000 ? Plus nobody at either dealer i know has heard of this. I have another 96 TD here today with 389,000 kms on it???
I've told you that I *can't* explain it, but I personally have one that rolled over and am aware of many others.... comes up on Vortex all the time "what the hell... my odo was reading 299xxxx and now reads 0".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0Aj1caFYP4So, it can and does happen. Why and when... can't say for sure... I've told you the one explanation I was given.
It only rolls over once (I think) and then the cluster no longer says total so the early ones that are reading over 300xxx might] actually be 600xxx+
just a thought

Yup, if the word "total" is not there then it has rolled over the first time.
Even worse, when it rolls over the second time it says "-------" and that's all she wrote.
