Hello,
My new 95 Golf, doesn't run, attempts to starts, then backfires thru intake.
Therefore, before going any further I wanted to check to see if the timing belt has jumped a tooth and perhaps something is advanced too far. (I bought it this way)
Would this be the procedure:
1. Bring engine\crank to TDC via flywheel\clutch housing mark.
2. Check to see cylinder 1 cam lobes are both pointing up. (as if you were changing the tmg belt)
Here's where I'm not sure what to do?
How do I check if the IP is timed correctly to the cam and crank?
I suspect I would need to check the static timing of the ip, using a dial indicator? Is this the only way?
If so, where is the best place to buy the dial indicator set up? Ebay?
Any brand to avoid?
Thanks
Aivars
What's that "sprocket locking tool" in your description? Any part number or sources?
It's the bottom tool

Any parts store should carry something similar.
It isn't needed for checking timing though. You only need to remove the 12mm bolt on the end of the pump to check timing. Plus the valve cover of course.
