• I just checked the cam timing today, and took this photo. The cam was locked at TDC, but the flywheel was off by this amount.
  
  
  
  I realize that it would be better to have the timing dead on, but is this amount of misalignment a big problem? I'm having clatter and white and black smoke issues. Thanks for any help.

• So basically your cam is retarded in relation to the crank.
  
  What is your pump timed to? cam or crank? How many millimeters?

• Yes, the cam is slightly retarded in relation to the crank. I don't know whether the pump is timed to the cam or crank. I asked for the timing to be set at .95 mm
  
  Should I ask my shop to redo the timing? The engine has never run this poorly in the 14 years I've had this car...

• If you paid someone to do that timing I'd be bringing it back. And I'd make sure that they understood that I wasn't paying anything for them to fix it.
