Hi all. This is my first post on here so please excuse if this is a dumb ass question.
I have just finished putting a diesel engine and gearbox in my previously petrol powered t25 (vanagon). Its an engine that originally came from a golf gtd (jr engine code). I am finding that the engine makes a metallic clatter at higher revs under moderate load, like cruising at 60mph. If I put my foot down o the gas pedal it seems to go quieter. It doesnt sound like a mechanical big end or camshaft knocking, more of a metallic detonation sound like a petrol engine pinking but louder.
Could this be down to the pump timing being incorrect, or have I bought a pup? I was assured by the seller of the engine it was in good working order.
I would check oil pressure at 60 mph to make sure it is good. It could be lifters or the injectors. Bad timing is also an issue. Typically with low oil pressure it shows at idle though, same with injectors.
It sounds like injection timing is happening too soon. If you mash the gas in all gears does it clatter? Might be easier to hear it in first.
I messed around with the pump timing last night and rotating the pump away from the engine about 1mm made things a whole lot quieter at idle. didnt get chance to road test it as I was busy patching up my nuckles from catching them in the alternator fan blades.Ouch!
