I read about the timing sprocket problem in 1.9td engines.... nothing has happened to my engine untill now... the engine is from a 97 golf so it prolly has the new type 12 point bolt.. but i heard thats not the rite cure and the bolt still breaks...
proper pix is known to be the TDI pulley and bolt... please tell me how its done and what are the parts needed from which VW TDI motor to perform this job?!!

will i have to do anything to my crankshaft?? cuz i dont wana take it out of the motor...
i just checked out the existing bolt... its a 12 point but it says 10.9 on the head... where as according to QuickTD on vwvoxtex (

The older bolts should be 6 point and 10.9 or 9.8.
Wheres newer stronger bolts are 12 point and 12.9 shud be written on top.
So im confused!!
Oh yes, you have to get it welded up, then machined down to fit the new sprocket.
Or if your lucky, some late model Mk IIIs have both the key and the flat so either crank sprocket will fit. The one issue I heard with just switching to the TDI sprocket is that its position limits your pump adjustment because it puts you at the ends of your elongated holes in the pump attachment brackets.
You can also have some dowel pins installed.....I did this on my TD without taking the crank out.....I know its not the best solution but its cheaper than remachinging the crank and it adds more security along with a new bolt and pulley!!!

I personally feel that a fresh sprocket, properly-torqued fresh bolt, and the addition of the one-way clutch pulley on the alternator should make a stock crank hum just fine.
Assuming that the sprocket has never loosened in the past and the crank is in perfect shape !!
Since you can't be sure what bolt the PO used, nor can you be sure it was torqued correctly, it's probably wise to start over yourself with fresh parts.
