that to me looks like an old mk1 75A alternator but im not sure :wink: hopefully someone else will chime in.

Considering this is a no-power steering manual everything kinda car, I wouldn't be surprised at all if it's the smaller 65w unit instead of the 90w, but I'd love to get confirmation from the gurus in the crowd.
Clearly from the pic it does use the W terminal...if I were to order from some place like Autoparts Canada, how could I make sure the unit I'm getting will have the W terminal on it? Or do all the new units have the W terminal these days?

if you just want to replace it with the same, it might be better to have it rebuilt. i've found that to be the best option for real bosch alts. starters too. bonus is, you know its the right part.

That does not look like the original alternator for your car. With AC, you should be running a Bosch AL30X, which is a 95 amp alt. The alt should also have a second hole near the the upper bracket hole, where the hose guard clips in.
You can can also use an alternator from an early gas car. I'm pretty sure the alt is the same, but you'll have to play with the pulleys to make them line-up right.

Ah ha! Giulianot you are correct sir, it's a 65W A1 alternator. Amusingly it's like half the price of the A2 which is very nice. My local autoparts store first ordered me the proper 95W unit, and while it would have fit it didn't match, so then with some digging in the book we found what it was. Will have it tomorrow morning, w00t!

I think the 65 amp ones have the plug on back.
The 90 amp ones bolt a lug to the back.

with a/c you should be using a 90+amp alternator.... otherwise your alternator wouldn't last long while the rad fan is running at high speed & your blower motor is at high speed with the a/c clutch going and everything else :wink:
does a/c still work? if not then don't sweat it (or try not to :lol: )

It looks more like a "Finikey" to me. That family bred like......well rabbits!
They came in all sorts of sizes and flavers, mostly they ran to the 65 Amp size, with a few exections named Frank (for some reason) that ran to the 90 Amp size. Franks were known for having "posts" insted of "plugs". Franks were also known to be sort of bullys, you know, larger and tuffer.
