Does a 1.8 gasser flywheel from a VW Quantum or Audi 4000 with longitudinally mounted engines bolt up to the 1.9 D?
I´m gonna put a 1.9 TD in a rwd mazda truck and need a flywheel with the starter ring gear towards the engine block.
The diesel flywheels are hard to comeby but the junkyards have alot of gasser ones. (still in the cars, hard to get a good look of the bolt pattern)
Anyone have a picture of a gasser flywheel to post on the forum or e-mail me?
The plan is to make an adaptor plate with a mount for the starter underneath the exhaust manifold and bolt a Volvo 5 speed gearbox behind the engine using a VW flywheel/pressure plate and the volvo clutch disc.
I'm not sure, but I think the diesel has more bolts on the flywheel than the gasser.
Gasser and diesel flywheel is same. Typ89 Audi flywheel is a little bigger than Passat/typ81.

Just watch out for TDC confusion... many gasser flywheels don't have a mark at TDC, so if you put one in your diesel you'll have trouble setting the timing.
Best to scribe a new mark while you have it out.
Thanks for the answers
I´ll scribe a new TDC marker on the flywheel and mark the bellhousing aswell. I bet the Mazda will become a whole lot quicker with the diesel mounted.
Here´s a pic of what it looks like. Pretty cool huh?
could you use a flywheel from a "98 jetta tdi, engine code ahu"
because it has a "normal style" clutch/fw setup???
same crank bolt pattern as a idi/td,,,,,
its not the center crank bolts that are different from a gas to diesel,so pressure plates are "same" that way, they all have 6 bolts
its the fw to pres. plate bolt patterns that are different, not a problem for what you are doing
hey i just thought ,,,,what the hell kinda flywheel setup do they use in those vw diesel/suzuki samuri enine swaps???
maybe somethin like that???
I know the newer european Passats use a regular clutch like flywheel, but a dual mass one.
ACME adapters for the Samurajs uses longitudal mounted flywheels that are machined to have the Samurajs ring gear pressed on.
awesome truck, have to put a stack on it.
Went and looked at work today and flywheels are the same.
Here are some pics of the adaptor plate I made to fit a VW 1.9 and a Volvo M47 5 speed tranny.
I used a Audi 80 gasser flywheel and pressure plate and a Audi 80 TDI starter and a custom made 4 paddle clutchdisc.
