ok i was having a brain storm while i doing some mindless work at work and thought of a great place for an intercooler. i thought of moving the batterie to the trunk and putting an intercooler in its place. i have not thought about what intercooler would fit there, i was just sooo excited about my idea. any thoughts would be great! thanks for the help!
What would be profoundly different than just mounting it over the transmission? I've been wrestling with this in my Jetta as well and the best idea I've come up with so far is to put in a Rabbit radiator in which would free up some space for me to sneak a 626 intercooler around in front.
thought of that too. i think i'm moving my batt to the trunck anyways, for something to do and weight dist even if it doesn't make a difference. only reason i'm not putting the IC there is because i got such a good FMIC. if it's done tastefully, i think you could get away with a hood scoop that cools an IC there but only if it is cut into the hood and doesn't protrude in any way. not sure how much of a neg effect that would have on collecting air but i couldn't bring myself to changing the side profile of the hood.

Like this? No need to remove the battery.

This setup has served me well for the last 160000km. I plan on installing a fan to help with heatsoak when in traffic but otherwise it works excellent. Air is ducted into the IC from the space above the rad. A1 and A2 cars may not have much room above the rad for airflow though...

A friend of mine did this with an A2 Jetta swap car. He put in the G60 supercharged engine from the Corrado and put the IC right where the battery was.
Seems to work ok. Plenty of room. He had a motorcycle radiator fan lined up to use on the IC as well. Not sure if he ever got that worked out.
Looks like a good plan to me. That's how I'm likely going to be doing it when I slap an intercooler into my 1.9TD.
something tells me Quick TD's IC install took a little more than a 'slap'!
Well spoken, Dr. Diesel. Perhaps I over-simplfy the process.
