I saw a post over on the vortex a while back. Someone was selling one, said it wouldn't fit if you have passive restraints.

They should have took a picture of it installed, that would make it sell. I have had passengers complain of no cup holder.

Cupholder would be nice, but I really just want somewhere to put my arm when i'm not shifting on long trips

If I'm looking at the picture correctly you'd have to have your arm in the back seat where the center passenger's legs would be to use this as an arm rest

Well I drive with the seat all the way back and reclined, so I think it might work out for an armrest. What do you think? BTW I'm male, about 6'1" and around 290#

and you can't figure out something to do with your hand when you don't need to shift the car?

I've heard that the quality was less than stellar but I don't know if the texture is the same as the original MK2 plastic.
The only problem with this is that the reclining adjustment knob becomes useless.

Fer a Mk1/2, this guy -
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290184110361&ssPageName=ADME:B:ONA:MOTORS:1123is a cupholder, and if you strapped on a cushion, an armrest (depending on how long your arms are - my elbow comes about my hip height, and so this cup holder is about right for a rest as well). It apparently gets in the way of the parking brake, which I have had to use for emergency stop... so I would be looking at a modification to allow brake function.
They get bid up rather high - I'm trying for this one, the last one went for ~$40.

I bought one for my 86 Golf. I am 6'1 and needed a place to set my arm also. Got it to fit with allot of modifications. First I took the seat backs off and swapped them from passenger to driver. This made it possible to use the reclining knobs, but the levers to tilt the seat backs forward to gain access to the rear seat are in the middle of the car. No big deal just a little while to get used to. The seatbelt buckles also have to be extended. The cut out for the parking brake handle has to be enlarged by allot. also the rear seat back won't go down all the way because it hits the back of the console. But my right arm has a place to rest and now I have more storage room. I like it. Not a bolt in like the Ebay description says.

How hard is it to switch the seatbacks? I have a 4-door so i don't have to worry about the seat levers. BTW I have 86 Golf 1.6 N/A with a new Giles pump. It is moving out much better now than it used to, but I'm curious, how much quicker is the turbo 1.6 in your Golf?
