Greetings,
I am in the process of converting my gas vanagon (84) to diesel by installing an 85 Jetta 1.6td engine. I have the proper quantum exhaust manifold and a complete 82 diesel vanagon for the other parts but the wastegate on the turbo interferes with the intake manifold. How have others fixed this...can I just remove the wastegate?
Thanks,
Rich Mason
That doesn't make sense to me. On my Quantum, the wastegate is under the turbo, while the intake manifold is on top of it. Can you explain further?
Thanks!
Rich, here's a photo of the turbo setup on my Quantum. The hoses have been removed to show the turbo and manifolds. The compressor section of the turbo is a bottom center (the oily looking round thing is the compressor outlet). The wastegate sits tucked up against the block a little below the compressor section.

Above the compressor section sits the EGR valve and associated plumbing (tube running to the right with a bellows segment). This may be what your post refers to. If so, this can be safely removed to make room, like shown below.
I had the manifold installed upside down.
