  I am in the process of converting my gas vanagon (84) to diesel by installing an 85 Jetta 1.6td engine.  I have the proper quantum exhaust manifold and a complete 82 diesel vanagon for the other parts but the wastegate on the turbo interferes with the intake manifold.  How have others fixed this...can I just remove the wastegate?

• That doesn't make sense to me. On my Quantum, the wastegate is under the turbo, while the intake manifold is on top of it. Can you explain further?

• Rich, here's a photo of the turbo setup on my Quantum. The hoses have been removed to show the turbo and manifolds. The compressor section of the turbo is a bottom center (the oily looking round thing is the compressor outlet). The wastegate sits tucked up against the block a little below the compressor section.
  
  
  
  Above the compressor section sits the EGR valve and associated plumbing (tube running to the right with a bellows segment). This may be what your post refers to. If so, this can be safely removed to make room, like shown below.
