alternator upgrade
« on: February 16, 2005, 09:19:02 pm »
There was a guy over on the vortex that wanted to buy a non-AC alternator bracket, for a Rabbit, from me.
He has power steering and I didn't think mine would work for him so I went looking for Jake's old post on his alternator upgrade.
Something everyone here should take a look at.

Jake the one picture is of a 55 amp alternator. Is the one you finally ended up with a 55 amp?

If I ever get enough money together I'll be switching to the serpentine belt system.  The kit I saw was just a pile of 1.9 parts including an AC IP/alternator bracket.  Was there also a non-AC bracket available?

I do not like the sound the v-belt makes when the glow plugs run for 3 minutes after startup.

Thanks, Steve

If you take a look at the alternator "dyno" plot, you can see that I think it gets up to around 55AMPs at the correct temperature and sufficient RPM.  I think denso may have officially "rated" it at a bit lower than that, though ((45AMP?).  However, other firms who re-sell that alternator under their own label do advertise it as a 55AMP units.

Wow, lots of good info, but going with a custom bracket for a non-stock alternator is really just too much work for what I want to do.  Does anyone know if it's possible to modify the existing alternator to self-excite or if there's a drop-in replacement that does so?  BTW, I'm talking about the 90A A/C alternator here.  Or maybe a good alternator shop that knows VWs that could advise on this issue?

Thanks,
Ray
