Help!! Cant get the Crankshaft pulley off!!!! 1.6D N/A

Trying to do my timing belt and water pump, and I believe this is the first time the bolts have been touched on this car. I bought air tools and a 6mm allen to get it off after I was unable to get it with hand tools. I soaked the bolts with pb blaster for 24 hours and went at it today with no luck. I think I have already stripped 1 bolt :cry: Any suggestion? I'm ready to put it back together and take it up to the vw dealership, but I thought I'd see if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks

The best way to get these little monsters out is with a 12-point 8mm driveshaft spline. Hammer it in to the bolts so it cuts its own slots, and they will come out without too much grief. New bolts are cheap from the dealer and they usually keep them in stock for this exact reason

I had to use a chisel to get mine turning (air chisel would have been better) and then relplaced the bolts when I put it back together. Came apart very easily that way.

When I strip and allen head bolt I hammer the shiz out of it which gives it back its shape and also usually knocks it loose. Then I hammer in the biggest allen socket I can and hit it with my impact.

Sometimes it's easier to take out the big bolt and just remove the
Crankshaft Pulley with the V Belt Pulley attached and remove those Bolts on the Bench.[/i]

Whack the outer edge of the bolt in the direction you want it to spin (counterclockwise) to get it started. That's probably not a really good explanation but it's the only way I can explain it. The only time my mechanic did my timing belt that was the first thing he did before he even tried them with the allen socket.

To loosen up the allen bolts take the largest pin punch that will fit into the centre of the bolt and hammer it with at least a 1lb ballpeen hammer. The name of the game is to break loose the rust that has formed on the underside of the bolt head. Soaking with penetrating oil before and after helps. If you can tap the side of the bolt head with the same large punch to move it sideways a bit to one side or the other this is also good, try different angles as well. The bit about the 12pt cv joint socket is great. And remember righty tighty lefty loosey. Cheers Dan

VW did like to use some odd ideas,
Beat them to near death with a hammer, Oh yes!
Buy a really good quality make of allen thingy for your socket ratchet.
This might sound weird, but an old gits trick was to put a blob of coarse valve paste on the allen for extra grip, seems to work. Good luck!
