my 1.6TD has been acting up! acts like it's loosing prime but i have clear fuel lines ! no bubbles in lines! i also have a primer bulb after my fuel filter! i thought it might be glow plugs but when i pulled the old ones they test good ! i went ahead and put new ones in! still hard start when cold 70 degrees here still! i have to feather the pedal to get it to start! when it starts it runs fine and starts good when warmed up! is there something that i am over looking? like to get this to start better before it gets cold here!
thanks Duane

Sounds like your timing might be off a bit. Does it puff white when it fires up?

Tyler,
yea i guess it's white? has that unstarted diesel smell! I don't know why but i like that smell  ! runs like a champ when it's runnung! Alot of black smoke when i get on it! when i run her real hard the temp gage will go up! would the timing make it do that? and whats a good setting on the dial indacator for the pump for that 1.6TD I'll dig into it tomorrow after work and see where it's set at!
thanks Duane

It sounds like your timing is retarded. I run my turbos at about 1.05 and my NAs at 1.00

Dumb question but are you actually getting full voltage to the glowplugs when the relay is on. You could try jumping the glowplug lead direct to the battery to see if that makes it start easier but don't leave it on too long if you have the quikglow plugs . Cheers Dan

Tyler,
my pump is set at 1.13! so that isn't bad? should i leave it or change it to 1.05? and bigblockchev, i wont rule that out ! when i put tthe truck together i did have a bad ground ! took me a while to find it ! I'll go out and clean battery terminals and fuse connections!the bus bar i cleaned all ready and glo plugs are new slow ones with matching relay! in the book it mentions pumps with yellow dot is set at 1.15 and with out is set at 0.87! where is this yellow dot they talk about in book? can someone explain that to me somehow? thats the only thing that i never understood!
thanks Duane
well i just rechecked the timing it's set at 1.05! well i'm gonna put it back together and see if cleaning battery terminals did it?
Duane
update still no start! i'll try jumper wire to glow plugs see if that makes a difference?

Tyler,
my pump is set at 1.13! so that isn't bad?
That strikes me personally as quite a bit advanced... VW recommend around 1.00 and a few people go 1.05....

I think there are some people on here running 1.10 advance. With the thinner ULSD wouldn't that extra advance help out more assuming the internal pressures in the pump have not been adjusted?

that was odd ! Vincent Waldon, I did recheck my timing and it was set at 1.05 there was 3 post in that one ! and my problem turned out to be a bad glow plug fuse! Bigblockchev suggested to check my current going to my glow plugs and the fuse was the problem! it's all fixed now starts and runs great!
thanks Duane
