my crank is shaking while the motor is running. i have searched for a solution to the aaz crank bolt problem but everything only talks about it after the bolt breaks. mine is not broken yet, can i just replace the crank stretch bolt with a new one? the pulley to the newer tdi style or will replacing the bolt fix it? how about the new harmonic balancer part, get that also? thanks

You can't change to the TDI style crank pulley without having the crank machined to accept it. Is it just the serpentine pulley wobbling or both the serpentine and the v-belt pulley? In a lot of cases the harmonic balancer is not assembled entirely straight from the factory and it wobbles, this is no cause for concern unless it is really severe. If the V-belt pulley wobbles that is an indication of crank pulley trouble.
Usually if it is worn enough to visibly wobble its too late to just replace the pulley and bolt. If the crank end is worn it will just work loose again. The best solution in this case is to pull the motor, remove the crank and send it to a machine shop for repair. You might also talk to Andy2 on this forum, he has devised a method of repairing the crank with the engine still in the car if it isn't too badly damaged. When you reassemble the engine install an alternator pulley with a one way clutch. This will help keep the pulley from working loose again.

There is an updated 12 point bolt you put on as preventative maintenance. I'd take off all the belt covers and see if you have a problem or not. If the timing pulley is loose or wobbley take it off and check the crank. The only problem is that you'll need special tools and timing belt/tensioner to put it back together.

hmm well my crank pully is a 12 point bolt, and looking at my bently my harmonic balancer looks more like the AHU instead of the AAZ. do the crank sprockets look different? anyone have any pics or know of any web sites that would show some pics of the differences?

The harmonic balancer of the AAZ and AHU engines are identical. The only way to tell if the pulley has been changed to a TDI type is to remove the balancer and read the part number off the timing pulley.
There are 2 versions of the 12point bolt. The latest (strongest) has a projection in the middle of the head about 12mm in diameter and 5mm tall. Here is a pic.

New style bolt is N905 771 01
TDI crank timing pulley (with "flat" - requires modified crank) 028 105 263D
Stock AAZ crank timing pulley (with "key" - fits crank with stock keyway) 028 105 263E

i've been curious... when buying crank sprocket bolts from the dealership for even 1.6L td, they give out that new style HD bolt. Does that mean it should get torqued to the new TDI specs, or the old A2 specs? Nobody at the dealer could answer that one.

When I replaced my crank sprocket and bolt, I went by the Bentley spec of, IIRC 66 ft-lbs then 1/4 turn. That's plenty tight, can't see it being more than that.l

on my bently it has the aaz and ahu motors and the torque specs are the same on the crank bolt

i have no idea for the 1.6 but i personally would torque it to the new bolts torque specs

I'm sure that the old bentley lists two torque specs one for the old 6 sided bolt and for the 12 sided one and it Gives the same 66 ft-lbs + 1/4 trun for the 12point, this for the 1.6D/TD.Same torque spec as the 1.9TD and TDI I think.

well, i put on the new crank bolt correctly and like before the crank timing gear doesnt appear to vibrate. When I put on the harmonic balancer the balancer chakes violently

. I measured the harmonic balancer and there is about 4mm difference on opposite sides WTF?

? Is my balancer messed up or are they suppose to be like that?
