So I have read lots of info on swaping out a gas engine out of a gas vanagon or doka but not too much on upgrading an already diesel vw. Ive got a 88 Doka that originaly came with a 1.6TD, the engine went and I upgraded to a 1.9TD. Now the 1.9TD is on its way out and I am looking at putting in a 1.9TDI. I understand about the electrical end of things for the change over and the engine will bolt up to the transmission, but do I jump the line with other modifications because the doka was already diesel?
-
Other than the engine management and style of injection, the AHU is the same engine as the AAZ. The AHU came with an intercooler stock but I'd recommend one on either engine. Other than that it's a bolt-in affair. The mounts are already all present. The trans gearing will be short for the TDI. Starting with a diesel van makes it a little easier, but it's not all that hard to convert a gasser van either.

All I want for xmas is a 2wd doka Tristar with an AHU mounted upright with water to air IC and a syncro trans so I can have a locking diff. Thats all, is that too much to ask???

That green truck is a Jagdwagen... a special edition Doka put together by VW for country gentleman hunters. The lower treasure chest contains a slide-out gun rack, and all that external bracing, winch, lights etc. is factory equipment. Rare truck!

Just a quick schooling. ;D Check out Josh's license plate. SinKa. Single cab. DoKa. Doppelkabiner. That build of Tony's was a serious one. Nice quality and attention to detail for sure.

any photos of the alh powered DOKA's oil pan? ???
no, but i imagine its just a regular FWD automotive pan.. the engine was not 100% upright, it was still leaned over a little bit, maybe 15* or so..
and it doesnt require the pan-mounted oil check/fill spout, because the oil cap is not sideways..
i dont remember seeing the long oil fill spout on the ALH powered Doka..

Yeah, the Doka looks like he's running a KEP adapter plate. The KEP plates angle at about the same as a transverse setup, so you don't have to change anything on the engine if you swap in an engine you pull out of a golf or therabouts.
What I'd like to know is what he did for his accelerator pedal, as he would have had to mount the electric pedal assembly as well as run a really long wire extension. Add that to the pain of disabling/hiding the immobilizer, so props to him for making it all work. There's a guy in the local Madison VW cruisers club with a baja bug running an ALH; his ECM and gauge cluster are hidden in a box.
