found a quantum syncro for 600 bones has 5cyl wasnt sure how it would bolt up if at all? 5speed...
-
There is an Audi trans that has both patterns, without that, no.
-
Isn't Quantum longitudinal and your Jetta's are transverse, so I would say no.
-
an audi 2.0L 5 cylinder diesel, or Volvo 6 cylinder diesel are the only engines that bolt up to a 5 cyl trans..
-
Isn't Quantum longitudinal and your Jetta's are transverse, so I would say no.
That has nothing to do with the engine bolting to the trany.
I would be nice if they made an adapter kit so we could easily build a quantum syncro wagon with a 1.6 TD. ;D

the 86-89 quattro trannies had both patterns i do believe..
Audi TD5 engines are not hard to find, and are tougher than a 1.6...

but are the parts as easy to get as a 1.6? this thing is 600 bucks and a 5 speed already so if what you say is true this would be a pretty darn easy swap.

a TD5 is just a 1.6D with an extra cylinder..
the manifolds, gaskets, crank, cam, pump, and stuff like that are the only things that are SPECIFIC to the TD5..
the internals are all identical to 1.6s, but with one more.. injectors are the same, but with an extra one.
you can also use lots of gasser 5 cylinder stuff on these engines as well.. (timing belt, water pump, seals, that sort of thing)
-
ah I see is the fuel economy the same?
-
Per cylinder it is, but with more displacement, you do better at low RPMs, and there is no balance shaft.
-
The posting for this car says "runs drives needs a headgasket" To me that doesn't make any sense. I've never done a headgasket before is it something i could do on the spot with a bag o tools? so i could drive it rather than trailer it or have it shipped?
-
so I talked to the owner. he said the po replace head gasket and machined the head to flaten it oit and re used the tty bolts so it leaks. ROR is this something I could maybe fix I knoe you've said you've re used tty bolts before.

86-89 are not dual bolt pattern...If that were the case I would have already put my AHU into my 87 4000CS quattro
....And if Audi TD5's aren't hard to find, how come I can't seem to find a head for mine?

I had a head gasket blow on my diesel swap in four different places. Ran and drove great....for about fifteen minutes. they can run but the heat gets into the coolant, and the temp needle just goes up up up.

How tough would it be to find a quatro trans for it?

A quattro trans that would bolt up to a 4cyl diesel? If you want to use the early manual locking diffs, like me, you need an 016 with the 4 cyl bolt pattern, and as far as I know, you can only get these in Europe

what about a balance shaft?
the 1.6 doesnt have either..
IM shaft maybe, but not a balance shaft..
if anything it is an un-balance shaft. LOL.

there are a GRIP of TD5s over on this side of the planet.. ive had chances to own lots...
and i know where there is a head for yours, you just have to pursuade me to remove it and ship it to you ;)
and maybe it was just the 2wd trannies that got both bolt patterns...
i know some of the Audi trannies were bisexual, just dont remember what ones..

can some one educate me on how hard itvwould be to make and adapter plate and how exactly they work. wouldn't the input shaft on the clutch be to short to go into clutch from thexwidth of the plate?

This guy claiming 35-38 mpg in a 2wd.. In the syncro it would probably be worse... no? A b3 with an AAZ is sounding like a better move(easier and cheaper) for a wagon project. though having an wad diesel wagon sounds zoo good..

You are right.
5's and 6's have a water pump in that spot, and it is the timing belt tensioner.

What is that going to take? And no, I will not trade my GTDI!! ;D

It is the 01A (5-speed Quattro) and 01E (5 and 6 speed Quattro) transmissions that will accept both bolt patterns. The 016 trannies in the U.S. will only accept the 5/6 cylinder engines. Swapping 01Es into Audi 4000 Quattros is fairly common, so I wouldn't think that swapping a 01E into a Quantum Syncro would be too difficult either.

Hi bbob203. It appears we are on the same search. I will look at the Quantum Syncro tomorrow, heavy rain and snow permitting, to determine if I will purchase the vehicle. I'm doing research on the Audi 2.0 Turbodiesel in case I purchase the car so I can make the swap.

TD5 engines are SUPER HARD to find, and even harder to find parts for..
-
ROR, you appear to be correct in the availability of the TD5's....I've found a few on the internet but have no idea what condition they're in but the cost is around $1,000 shipped. I'll look more on the availability of parts but since pistons, injectors, etc. are the same as the 1.6 that should never be a problem. I'll know more tomorrow when I purchase or walk away from the QSW (Quantum Syncro Wagon). I just really want a 4wd diesel wagon for driving in the mountains skiing and hunting.
