However I do not know how to go about it.
I have stock springs right now with a coil that has rusted and broken off the top on both rear springs, and I kind of like where it has brought the 84 jetta in height.. However i want to mimic this drop on my 81 for when i get my new struts. Monro Sensa-Tracs which apparently handle 1" drop really well, as they are a mono-tube design it really stiffens them up.
However if I can I don't want to have to spend $200 on a set of sport springs. The rear of my 84 with gray KYB's and about a 3/4" drop handles really well out back.. no slop and is very very tight.
I have heard bad things about cutting springs, however I am not looking to "slam" my car. Just a conservative and effective drop to stiffen everything up. What are your personal opinions on the situation?
thank-you for your time. lol

I'm sure there is a thread somewhere on vortex listing all the various manufacturers, p/n's, ride heights etc for every vw lowering spring ever made but the search function sucks over there so I just came up with these from the classifieds:
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?4943682-FS-Spax-Race-Lowering-Springs&highlight=lowering+springs
The ad is a bit old but the price is right and I think the ride height is as well.
-
I too have been thinking the same for my 98 tdi. The cheapest I could find was http://sap082.channeladvisor.com/
-
Yes, thiose are both good! I am trying to stiffen it up, without loosing qualuity or height.. I have enough bad roads in Ontario to contend with lol
-
cheap, fast, reliable. You only get two.
Im very happy with the cup kit in my carat. Its a 60/40 drop iirc.
-
Cheap & Fast Please ;) I'm still only 20, I need to make more life mistakes yet before I smarten up lol
-
i dunno what the actual lowering i got from this since i had saggy old springs to start with, but i have h&r springs with bilstein sport shocks/struts and jom 1/2 lowering spring caps, not really low at all but its where i like it and it rides and handles awesome

Raceland my friend.
$70.00 shipped for a full set of coils.
Maybe a tad more to Canada but still..
I bought a set for my son in-law and he loves them.

How does he find the ride? I've mailed Raceland and they were a bit vague about spring rates and how much higher they are then stock?
-
its a cadillac hood ornament, when i bought the car it had the base of the bunny ears hood ornament, but no ears, so i replaced it with the caddy emblem
-
Zukgod1 those look alright! I might look in to them. Racelandus has some 40mm progressive lower springs for $58 or so... So which ones are these?
-
has anyone done a 40mm drop on a monroe sensa-trac? They say they will handle a moderate drop, but I would like to know the ride. It will be stiff, but thats ok its what i'm after.
-
you want to lower...I would like to raise. Something like this for my next ride???

I think I will stick with stock springs with the dead coils cut off to drop it without harming the ride at all.
I will follow proper spring cutting techniques, so its all good.
-
While still on the topic ;)
There is two that i am looking at from Race land, and they appear to have different looking springs.
Lowering Springs for VW Golf Jetta I Mk1 (Does not fit Cabriolet)
Golf I 1.6 GTi / 1.8 GTi / Jetta 1.6 GLi /1.8 GTi / 1.6D
Drop: 25mm F/R

Lowering Springs for VW Golf Jetta I Mk1 (Does not fit Cabriolet)
Golf I / Jetta I 1.1 / 1.3 / 1.5 / 1.6 excluding GTi /GLi
Drop: 40mm F/R
(http://sap082.channeladvisor.com/images/Product/medium/97.jpg)
The first one that seems more geared towards the GTI and GLI's is only an inch drop, but seems a far more aggressive coil. Why would this be? Wouldnt you want the 40mm drop to be the stiffer and not the 25mm drop?
$58 for a nearly stock ride height.. seems it may be the ticket.. I'll have to think about it lol
-
if you cut coils, just remember that the spring rate gets stiffer with every coil you cut.. even part of a coil can change the ride firmness..
i would go with the -25mm springs, or a set of sport, stock ride height springs...
mk1s bottom out too much, what can we do to fix it besides leave our cars, stock, or lifted?
the more i think about it, the more i STILL want to lift my rabbit..

Higher spring rates and firmer damping?
-
Cutting your springs will almost always result in a crappy bouncy ride for the reasons mentioned above. Might be ok if you went to stiffer shocks to deal with the now stiffer springs but on stock shocks it will suck and eventually blow the shocks out completely.

All you need to eliminate a little wheel gap is 4 Short blocks. That will give you lowering without changing springs LOL
Posting a couple more in that for sale thread about my trip as well.

hah niice
Got some parts on the way to lower me down :)
