Here's my new toy, mk I caddy
http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy%2520Mk%2520I/Hieman%2Bsiistittyn%25E4%2Bjo.jpg
I wonder what this will end up to, the starting point is mk1 caddy my. -83. The original engine is the familiar 1,6d na.
The last owner had already swapped in 1,9td AAZ and 5-speed gearbox. The engine was full of nasty surprises and after thinking a moment I decided to remove it and the gearbox.
After thinking another moment I decided to install the vento's old twin-turbo engine, with a little lower state of tune and with "only" two turbos :)
For the gearbox I will use a cable operated 02A transmission with hydraulic clutch
I got the engine bay clean after a while of washing,i was surprised how much dirt had gotten in there

Please keep us updated! I'd love to see some pics of the engine.
-
So you decided to make a topic, nice 8)
-
I like the front bumper with the squirters for headlights. Also the mirrors, are those Vanagon or true truck mirrors?
Gonna be a nice truck if it gets any of the same attention that your Vento got.
-
Man that front end looks good, I wish we got the round headlight version.........
Keep on postin'!!! ;D
-
I like this shot best... can't wait until I've got some spare cash to spend on the paint.

looks like they came off something else, and were mounted left mirror on right side, anr right mirror on left side..
-
Finnish imported Caddys came with those huge elephant-ear mirrors. Weird ::)
-
i stand corrected..
-
I've seen Vanagon mirrors on trucks and they look more ugly than those. Want to sell them???
-
Also what are those seats that are in there. Are they old Recaro?
-
"This page is in Finnish. Would you like to translate it?"
I love that :P
Can't wait to see the progress guys!
-
some progress in this project, only few pics though.I'll try to take more next time when I'm working with the chassi. The rear axle is to be with 4 shock absorbers because the caddy original is a little poor because of the the cross-mounted shocks. The rear brakes will be upgraded to discs.
I took the head off the vento's old engine and after some small welding it will be good enough for caddy.
I also had some time to plan the exhaust manifold and the turbos. The bigger one will propably be schwizer s200/holset and the smaller will also be self-made hybrid S1e super. The hot side of the bigger turbo was slightly modified. The flange was changed from T3 to T25

-
I've been very busy lately with other things and haven't been able to work with Caddy for a while now.But today I finally finished the turbo package that is going to my wife's car. I hope she's happy with it. She is wery demanding about these things.Car is 1.9td vento.

http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/h%E4r%F6ilyt/jotain+muuta/tupla+vasen.jpg
Beleave me, something a bit different is s going into the caddy. Atleast what comes to the airflow numbers. ;)
his turbo package fits directly to the AAZ original intake manifold. The intake manifold in the picture is not original.
-
OMG...
that picture is sexy.
damn near orgasmic!
(if you ever sell one of your old compound setups, i want first chance.. i love your work.)
-
purely intense. Wow
-
Sadly I think my original setup with one turbo is harder to get at than this. I think the intake on AKI's would be easier to pull off then stock 1.6. It looks OK too ;)
-
OEM vs. AMS
http://i434.photobucket.com/albums/qq68/Aki-76/asiakas%20osia%20ja%20muuta/19122010949.jpg
These are made for my customer and for myself I have planned something more massive. ;)
-
been a little busy at work so I haven't had much time to build caddy. But something little I have done with the engine.
http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy%20Mk%20I/caddyn%20tekniikka/caddyn+runkolaakeri+pukit.jpg
the christmas came a little late

http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy+Mk+I/caddyn+tekniikka/14mm+rotorhead.jpg
pump has "enough" reserve for the goal ;)
-
Did Pasi tell how much fuel that pump will put out?
-
My job has unfortunately taken a lot time lately, so I have not been able to build caddy as much as I'd want.anyway, something little has been happening at least with the engine.
MJF asked about the capacity of the pump and indeed we did a few runs on a test bench. the basic capacity is 198cc and the maximumcapacity was a whopping 402cc so it seems to be a quite violent pump.It is not the purpose of this project to utilise the full potential of this pump, because it would mean close to 700hp.
the turbo policy is also starting to take shape. the idea is yet again to make low end powerwith mechanical charging and use the turbocharger for top end. I thought to try a centrifugal-type charger as the mechanical one and big turbo.
http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy+Mk+I/turbot+sovittelussa.jpg
The turbo in the picture is scwitzer s300, but I will propably change it to s200 super. Anyway you get the idea
Big chargers = big power,no compromise :)
-
that turbo is massive
-
http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy+Mk+I/jarrukikkaretta.JPG
brake parts :)
-
that turbo is massive
WOW!!
(that was where i had originally intended to mount my LP turbo also, glad im not the only one that thinks it would have been a good idea)
-
Beautiful work Sir. I am curious though: with the heat of the compound set-ups; did you have to consider passive cooling (think WRX hood scoop) to force cold side air over the setup and out the bottom? Or will this even generate the amount of heat to worry about?
Cheers,
Andy

Sweet!
-
How do you spool those things????
-
Are both those turbos external wastegate types? What about a vnt for the low pressure?
-
this work is impressive !
keep up the good work !
-
What material did you use to weld the new flange on?
Looks good..

First tought the engine i used last summer, wouldbeen complete and almost ready to use in caddy. Atleast all thoseparts inside the block.
I was quite surprise when i took the pistons off

now thats business :o :o
not understanding the internal WG turbo and the external WG.
how are you going to cool that much power?
excelent!
-
Jesus H Christ!
-
Look again.Turbo has NO wastgate.. ;D
-
that wastegate dump is bigger than most of our downpipes!

those pistons CROWNS are coated, arent they?
and can you tell us the reason you did the arrow shaped combustion chamber, rather than clover leaf?
there HAS to be some reason as to why you did it that way.
-
jep, piston is ceramic coated top and teflon coated skirt.very slippy ;D
engine every bearing is allso teflon coated.
http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/red%20devil%20projekt/DSC_0079.jpg
cylinder is honed extra fine stone.

is there any particular reason you used ARROW shaped flame paths in the piston?
or is that a secret? one of those "if i told you, i would have to kill you" type of things?
LOVE reading about your work..
im in the process of fitting a VNT20 to a 1.6L engine, in a mk2 Jetta.. should be fun.
but not as fun as the monster you are building!

My block is at the machine shop now getting the same coatings put on....whenever the machinist finally gets around to doing it. The coating for bearings here isn't teflon, but some "slick coat" stuff that is sandable when cured as I understand, but still very slick.
The main question I want to know is did you have the IM shaft bearings coated too? I wondered how that would end up if someone did.

the bearings would have to be cut over-size on the inside, to allow for build up of the coating material. the person, or company doing the coating would have to know how thick each layer of coating were, and how many coats were to be used, to get a rough number on how much to cut them.
or am i just over thinking things?!

I have been very busy and I've beentrying to get projects completed. Wife's car should be ready to start up in a few weeks time. Still need to do some cooling and diesel lines.Waiting for dyno results as I know that it will be very fast
Some time ago I did 1.9 tdi engines for two friends and got them tested on the dyno, at last
engines were both 1.9TDI, another everyday car, and the other a bit more track-oriented
here is daily driver dynosheet
