Title: My new toy MkI caddy
Post by: Aki-76 on November 19, 2010, 12:26:15 pm

Here's my new toy, mk I caddy

http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy%2520Mk%2520I/Hieman%2Bsiistittyn%25E4%2Bjo.jpg

I wonder what this will end up to, the starting point is mk1 caddy my. -83. The original engine is the familiar 1,6d na.
The last owner had already swapped in 1,9td AAZ and 5-speed gearbox. The engine was full of nasty surprises and after thinking a moment I decided to remove it and the gearbox.

After thinking another moment I decided to install the vento's old twin-turbo engine, with a little lower state of tune and with "only" two turbos  :)
For the gearbox I will use a cable operated 02A transmission with hydraulic clutch

I got the engine bay clean after a while of washing,i was surprised how much dirt had gotten in there

I like the front bumper with the squirters for headlights. Also the mirrors, are those Vanagon or true truck mirrors?
Gonna be a nice truck if it gets any of the same attention that your Vento got.

looks like they came off something else, and were mounted left mirror on right side, anr right mirror on left side..

some progress in this project, only few pics though.I'll try to take more next time when I'm working with the chassi. The rear axle is to be with 4 shock absorbers because the caddy original is a little poor because of the the cross-mounted shocks. The rear brakes will be upgraded to discs.
I took the head off the vento's old engine and after some small welding it will be good enough for caddy.

I also had some time to plan the exhaust manifold and the turbos. The bigger one will propably be schwizer s200/holset and the smaller will also be self-made hybrid S1e super. The hot side of the bigger turbo was slightly modified. The flange was changed from T3 to T25

I've been very busy lately with other things and haven't been able to work with Caddy for a while now.But today I finally finished the turbo package that is going to my wife's car. I hope she's happy with it. She is wery demanding about these things.Car is 1.9td vento.

Beleave me, something a bit different is s going into the caddy. Atleast what comes to the airflow numbers.  ;)

his turbo package fits directly to the AAZ original intake manifold. The intake manifold in the picture is not original.

Sadly I think my original setup with one turbo is harder to get at than this. I think the intake on AKI's would be easier to pull off then stock 1.6. It looks OK too  ;)

Title: Re: My new toy MkI caddy
Post by: Aki-76 on February 18, 2011, 08:54:42 am
My job has unfortunately taken a lot time lately, so I have not been able to build caddy as much as I'd want.anyway, something little has been happening at least with the engine.
MJF asked about the capacity of the pump and indeed we did a few runs on a test bench. the basic capacity is 198cc and the maximumcapacity was a whopping 402cc so it seems to be a quite violent pump.It is not the purpose of this project to utilise the full potential of this pump, because it would mean close to 700hp.

the turbo policy is also starting to take shape. the idea is yet again to make low end powerwith mechanical charging and use the turbocharger for top end. I thought to try a centrifugal-type charger as the mechanical one and big turbo.

http://aki76.kuvat.fi/kuvat/Caddy+Mk+I/turbot+sovittelussa.jpg

The turbo in the picture is scwitzer s300, but I will propably change it to s200 super. Anyway you get the idea
Big chargers = big power,no compromise   :)

Beautiful work Sir. I am curious though: with the heat of the compound set-ups; did you have to consider passive cooling (think WRX hood scoop) to force cold side air over the setup and out the bottom? Or will this even generate the amount of heat to worry about?

Cheers,
Andy

or is that a secret? one of those "if i told you, i would have to kill you" type of things?

My block is at the machine shop now getting the same coatings put on....whenever the machinist finally gets around to doing it. The coating for bearings here isn't teflon, but some "slick coat" stuff that is sandable when cured as I understand, but still very slick.
The main question I want to know is did you have the IM shaft bearings coated too? I wondered how that would end up if someone did.

the bearings would have to be cut over-size on the inside, to allow for build up of the coating material. the person, or company doing the coating would have to know how thick each layer of coating were, and how many coats were to be used, to get a rough number on how much to cut them.

or am i just over thinking things?!
