Title: What have you done since the forum crashed
Post by: catlin_cava on September 22, 2010, 07:10:06 pm
What has everyone been doing since the forum crashed?

I'll go first....I caved in to temptation finally...I just couldn't say no to it  ;D

I saw those pics on facebook! Looks awesome!

I just received a K24 turbo tonight, I'll be running that alone for a bit until I get the rest of the engine ready for some compounded boost! :O

Head studs on order, intercooler sitting in my bedroom... just need bolts/washers for my girdle and plumbing for my intercooler and I'll start building the motor up!

After swearing I'd never own a diesel Vanagon again, I too caved in and bought another one last week. It's a 88, stock TD, imported some time ago from Germany. Coolest part about it is the 3 person bench seat up front. It's got a ECO pump on it right now, so it's slower than slow, but I`ve already got a few performance mods in mind for it.

I have started to break in my TD in the 86 jetta. Still trying to figure out fueling, I have WAY TOO much on boost. I will try to get a video soon, maybe.

We've kind of been stalled in our rebuild, waiting for parts and the machine shop to finish with the block and head.

We updated our build thread though to show what has been arriving and whats in store for our Mk1 TD :) Lots of shiny new/rebuilt things to go in it have arrived (we won coilovers, got a Giles pump, and a turbo rebuild, also got the engine bay painted, just to name a few things!)

Glad the site is back. We'll be starting to assemble in the next week or so, so its perfect timing!

After taking the summer off (live on a lake with teenaged son who still wants to hang with me) I've started back on my new hydro head build from Prothe to go on my mechanical block in my Dodge Caravan diesel conversion. Right now I'm making a valve spring compressor as my trusty large C-clamp type does not work on this head. I need the springs, keepers and cups from the old head.

I was about to put a self-rebuilt IP on my Jetta, but I slow-rolled it waiting for you guys to show up again.

I have been driving my Benzes, and actually, liking them a lot (until I have to fuel them  :(, and the  #@$%^& alternator crapped out on my 240D today)

I cleaned the car (at least in the outside), and changed a worn drive shaft.  ;)

i didnt buy any new cars...

but i did work on my old ones.. diesel got a different oil pressure sender. thats it. nothing more.

but my GTI got alot of work, but it still needs a clutch. it needed a new wheel bearing to begin with, but i was too broke for one, so i decided to pull one side of the suspension off my parts car, but instead of just replacing one knuckle, it got upgraded suspension off a 92 GLI 16v. included in the upgrade were the drilled rotors, struts, springs(lower), knuckles, caliper mounts, ball joints, and 92 brake lines, along with some other little things. lots of things different between the stock brakes, and the girling 54s i put on it. and it was a good thing i swapped the brakes, because the stock brakes had ~1mm of lining left on the pads. a wheel bearing turned into a whole day of work. but the results are well worth it!

and another thing that was replaced, was the proportioning valve. i used one from the same parts car, and it was equipped w/ abs. i have been told that abs and non abs valves do not interchange or work the same. they may not.. but let me tell you what, they sure do work good when there hooked to 22mm master cylinders on non-abs brake systems. my car stops better now than it ever has since ive owned it.

also replaced the rear shocks with some KYB GR2 shocks. its so much better handling now. it rides kinda stiff, but really sticks to the road. also did some new tires and wheels on my GTI. i put the Enkei meshies (same ones as Lovinthedeez has) back on, with some 185/70/14 tires i got used, for a good deal. even got some alignamentation to make the tires last longer. but the tires are a bit on the tall side for a lowered car, thats for sure. they rub pretty bad when you turn and hit any sort of bump.

I've decided to let my 1990 1.9 na Transporter go. I don't need it for work anymore, and rather get something i little more economical, comfortable and certainly faster. Looking for a good solid  MK3 Jetta TDI. So if anybody knows of one for sale, i'd rather be patient and buy a good one.

I turbo'ed my Jetta. What a world of difference! I can actually use my 0.75 5th gear at 55 mph now.

Here is a pretty crappy picture but you get it.

No intercooler for now. I had to have it running so I can drive it to school this coming week.

Went through withdrawal symptoms....lolol

Actually, on vacation (holiday) from work. Worked part time gig many days.  Went to Tennessee, Ohio, DC, and in Philly right now for my 1st wedding anniversary. Highlight of it all was FINALLY getting my 1989 N/A Jetta to Maine to have a new engine put in it, and some other work. Went to U-haul to get a transport, and towed it 400 miles to Livermore, Maine. Which is the home of one of our posters, who I finally got to meet after numerous pm's....lol

And getting a 2007 Dodge Mega Cab (Cummins of course...), and trading in my 2002 F-250 7.3. I am going to miss the 250, but I need a 4 door truck with a family now.

Anyone looking to beef up a Cummins? lolol

Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

I drove the Caddy cross country, logging 5600 miles in two weeks.
SoCal to Des Moines, IA to Charlotte, NC to Atlanta, GA to Taos, NM to SoCal... was in a wedding, visited family, delivered a few personal items for a friend and looked at real estate along the way.

The truck fared well... lost the vacuum pump crossing the Rocky mountains, had an ongoing issue with sticky steering (gets worse as the car heats up) and had the lower steering column bearing drop out. Best mileage was 46.6 and average was 43.7 (crossing two 10k' passes in the Rockies and climbing from Topock gorge in a headwind did me in) while maintaining 65 - 70 mph.

Bought a Caddy, blew the head gasket on it. Replaced the head gasket on it. Installed Coil-overs on the front. Installed some BBS wheels. Upgraded to GTI vented/drilled rotors. Bought some RECARO seats for it. Bought a few turbo parts so I can convert it to turbo. Bought some Hella reflectors so I can add my HID's and PIAA headlight harness. Picked up a FF trans so I can actually drive it. Bought a GTI lip.

I know there is more but that's all I can remember at the moment.

I am usually the least observant person on the planet, but what is up with the grill? It has a little smile going on toward the passenger headlight. It almost looks bent. ???

I got a Spal 4" puller fan for the oil cooler. I have bolted it to the core, but I am dragging my heels on the wiring. I need to do so much wiring with this car it is daunting.

I scored some new Febi strut tower mounts at H20 for $35. Maybe I will slap them on this weekend.

Oh yeah, I drove up to Ocean City MD for H2Oi on Friday night and back on Sunday  610 miles each way. The car did great. I have developed a crack in my windshield though I don't recall any trauma that would have caused it. :'( However,I met some cool people, saw some amazing cars, and had a great time so it was definitely worth it.

Oddly enough my best tank achieved a 45mpg average and that was the one I got at a truck stop in Emporia VA before several hours of driving on 55mph backroads through the bucolic hinterlands between I 95 and the coast. This tank also included all the sitting in traffic and several spirited and sooty passes up and down the strip with my fellow VW enthusiasts while I was in Ocean city. I was trying to show those gasser guys that turbo bark sounds way cooler than a blow off valve. ;D Anyway I got my next tank south of the bridge-tunnel on the way back. The tanks that were burned up entirely on I 95, which for those of you who may not know is a 70 mph limited access highway that is as straight as an arrow and flat as a board, only gave me 42mpg. All my efficiencies are a little low because according to my GPS my speedo is a little slow. I'm thinking I need a taller transmission, because I wasted a ton of fuel driving like an idiot in OC and still did better than I did on the highway.

So glad this board is back up.

bigger intake piping would turn that engine into a different animal. why make it suck thru a drinking straw? not saying that the way i did it is the right way, or that much better, but i used 3" intake piping all the way to my turbo. i know its not seeing any restrictions up on the top end.. yours would probably gain almost 5 psi up top with a better air intake to the turbo.

i used to run real small intake piping on my rabbit, then i switched, gained 5 psi, and was way happy.
