First few posts were mislead thinking the problem was not related to the oil pump at all.
This thread is more of a reference to know that when using the AAZ block the 1.6 oil pump interferes with piston #2. IF you wanted to mix the two together.

When you do find one to put in:
I go around the edge with a bic pen to make sure it's centered.
So the pushrod hits the center of the push point.

What fatty said. I did some clutch work once and I didn't get that big circlip that holds the "plate thing" seated exactly right. A few days later the plate worked loose and almost left me stranded. Had to pull it apart again... >:(

Alright. Thanks for the advice guys. I'm still baffled that a new clutch set up doesn't come with one...
the one i have is from my 200mm set up. It's likely going to be too small for the 210 :(

check the 200mm one out. I think the center hole and all the stuff on the inside *bolt holes, fins, and clutch plate thing* are all the same. I just wish they would put a bearing there instead of a little piece of junk brass thing. ::)

They did... it's called the throwout bearing.... and it's at the *other* end of the pushrod! ;-)

AFAIK 200 and 210mm plates are the same.

I've done that fix twice on cars I've sold. Pimply-faced teeners who think their 2.0 ABA is a racecar. It'll blast the push-rod thru the plate in short order.

okay i have a new very pressing issue to deal with.
the cam is off the engine. the VAC pump is out of the block. It's in neutral. i try to turn it over with a ratchet and it gets stuck in the same place backwards or forwards and it's a pretty solid thunk when it does so.
its not valve contact because i removed the cam.
its not a stuck oil pump or vac pump because i removed the vac pump.
ANYONE have ANY idea wtf is wrong here...
its a 210mm flywheel from a late 80's gasser. 9 bolts.
i have the 8v flywheel and pressure plate in there with the 200mm plate thing that the pushrod pushes on.
its probably worth noting that the clutch pedal is NOT very difficult to press. It's definately pushing on something but its barely stiffer than the 200mm stock one.

The only thing i've come up with as of now is that the dust cover is somehow in the way? i have no idea how but that's all i've got.

ok, here we go....
I doubt that it is the clutch assembly, so here are a few questions to narrow it down.
is this a new transmission, or your old one? you can eliminate internal tranny issues by trying to turn the motor over with the clutch pedal down, thus decoupling the motor from it, and only turning the motor.
did you make sure the motor would turn over while on the stand before you attached it to the transmission and installed it in the car? if not, it is a good idea in the future, as any issues are much easier to fix before the motor is installed.
if none of that helps, I would pull the pan and look at the innards as you turn it over looking for any interference

When it was on the stand i guess i never turned it over more than 360 degrees!!! what a fool I am!
I just pulled the pan off in the dark. I pulled the oil pump off as well and its not hitting the windage tray BUT one of the rod caps hit the flange part of the pick up tube for the oil pump!!!
Disaster! :(
What do i do?!

I'm temped to try and modify it with my dremel to make it clear... it just barely hits the pick up tube... clears the windage tray entirely. It's such a weird coincidence that it would just BARELY hit the pick up tube. its not even the tube its self it's hitting but the very edge of the flange (i think?) its hard to tell under the car in the dark with my flashlight.

Check that rod cap isn't on backward, then clearance the flange.

I think if you got the cap to fully seat on the rod then it is on the proper way

on a 1.6 the side with the "bumps" goes toward the timing belt

how is a rod cap hitting the pickup flange? its like 2 inches below the crank? least they are on my engines.

kevin is yours the AAZ?
the rod cap (the counter weight ON the rod cap) hits the flange part of the tube (where the tube flange joins the pump)

AAZ must be WAY DIFFERENT from the earlier engines then. and way different than gasser engines. because my rod caps dont come that close to the oil pump. did you bolt a 1.6 or a 1.9 pump on it? did you loosen the pump to see if you could move it out of the way a little? they do have some wiggle room...
i was just assuming that an AAZ was just like a 1.6 bottom end, just with a tad longer stroke, and bigger bore size, taller block.

yeah apparently. I can see where it was hitting the feed pipe. i HOPE if i grind it down it will clear. No progress today. went to the beach mostly because i really mashed my fingers last night...
