I'm swapping blocks and changing clutch disks and pressure plates. While i have it apart anyone recommend any parts to replace? bearings? seals, that kind of thing. I don't know a THING about transmissions so anyone with some know how please share with me!
i'd really appreciate it. going to be buying parts soon.

and getting the standard 5-speed tranny gasket set but should i get all those pinion bearings and main shaft bearing and all that stuff.

You and me both. I am going to go with brokevw for my repairs. The main thing I do know is the 020 has the self machining syndrome that is fixed with a bolt kit. I got my bolt kit from summit which matched jegs price of 52.95. I just don't have the confidence or patience to take a trans apart with no backup if I make the epic fail. BTW brokevw has this site and sells parts as well as tons of pics to help tear down a VW trans.

do everything you can, its apart now, better then going a few thou k and having a part fail.

I generally do:
- both drive flange seals
- throw-out bearing
- push rod bushing
- push rod seal
- input shaft seal
- new green cover plate...obviously!
- 2.000l new tranny fluid
The Worldpac guys carry all of the seals and bushings for cheap.
I'll also inspect the push rod itself for unusual wear and reseat both drain plugs with antiseize for ease of access the next time.

Smokey has asked me for a little help translating between what Vince calls the parts and what the Worldpac sites call 'em:
Under "Transmission"
drive flange seals: "final drive seal kit" W0133-1638840
new green cover plate: "trans. end cover gasket" W0133-1638389 (black)
input shaft seal: "mainshaft seal" W0133-1641999
Under "Clutch"
throw-out bearing: "release bearing" W0133-1633611
push rod bushing: "clutch pushrod bushing" W0133-1642848
push rod seal: "clutch pushrod seal" W0133-1542355
One more part I usually replace with the tranny out of the car... the starter bushing.
Under Engine Electrical:
starter bushing: "starter bushing" W0133-1644017
Our starters have to tug pretty hard on the flywheel those cold BC mornings and for a buck it's cheap insurance against doing the job in -30 weather! My HOW-TOs list an easy way to get that sucker outta there.
BTW... the usual "YMMV" disclaimers apply to the above list... in particular, the Worldpac part numbers above are illustrative... check 'em yourself for proper application against your particular vee-hickle. ;)

Hey, if they don't go boom every once in a while you're probably not pushing the envelope enough. Gotta TDI engine on the stand at the moment that let go during a "let's see if I can free up the vanes with my right foot" experiment .... ah well. :D
Just make sure you order yourself new rod bolts, huh??!! ;D

sucks about the TDI though, like ... well and truely. was it an experiment done by you or the PO and you're fixing it?
I'm assuming spraying WD-40 into the intake wouldn't have freed the vanes up would it.
It would get to the vanes eventually ;) in what state thought is up for interpretation.

just did everything included in waldons post a little while ago
worked great before my bottom end wore out entirely. :P
