Nice!  ;D

Our company trucks suck... F-150's. Eww. The one I use sometimes is gutless with a V6, but at least it has a 5 speed manual... and is only useful in 3rd. 4th and 5th are just geared too tall. ::)

Will it loose speed worse than a VW bus going up a slight hill? I swear my bus is quicker in top gear than the truck in top gear. :-\

nice looking trucks, what kind of transmission does the chevy have in it?

I have never driven a tilt top before, but have plenty of hours driving a mack pulling a 50' duckbill lowboy around.
that and way too many hours in a ten yard end dump
pretty mind numbing work after a little while...

All our trucks are standard except for our little 3/4ton service truck. Mines got a 6speed in it. Its pretty peppy in down but once I get onto the highway loaded its a gutless pig. I lost my speed going up a hill at a 100Kph towing a 3/4 dodge 4x4 and I was down to 60 trying to make the hill...AND ITS NOT A BAD GRADE!!!!
We do have a wrecker but its for BIG trucks. The rollbacks are nice for anything. Especially at an accident.

Ewww, F150? That's not a work truck, that's a toy!

Local independent wrecker around here has an old school F350 Dually based tilt... with a DD 8v71 twin turbo shoehorned under the hood (and body, as I think he said it's rear-mount turbos...).

That thing is loud when it rattles to life first thing in the morning... :o

we have an end dump with a 8v71, gutless pig...
and we have a piece of crushing equipment powered by a 16v149( a really huge motor that makes an unbelievable racket, and about 1000HP)

so your tilt top has a six speed eh', must be nice.
does it act like a standard(clutch works between gears) or a real truck?

I am so used to shifting without a clutch that I rarely use it anymore in anything I drive.

Yep. F-150. We never use it to tow anything, just for hauling stuff. I really hate the way the engine acts when you shift. Normally when I upshift, I'll depress the clutch and let off of the accelerator at the same time and then shift. In the truck if I do that, the engine will rev up briefly when you depress the clutch. It's stupid. You have to let off the accelerator for a sec, then clutch.  >:( Makes accelerating quickly and smoothly difficult.

Yea 6 speed standard with a clutch that takes all my force to push in...I only use the clutch when I'm in town.

having synchromesh between gears certainly makes dealing with traffic easier(and allows shifting on steep grades)
luckily we don't have to deal with too much traffic out in dutch harbor.

My 'company car' has a Series 50 Detroit, which makes my rig a slug sled on the streets of Brooklyn. With a push button Allison, the only shifting I get to do is in my VW's. :)

Like your rigs, it is still fun to drive. :)

Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

I don't get a company pickup, just get to drive the end-dumps and semi's.

I ride a motorcycle to work every day(2007 KLX 250S) and often make part runs etc. on it.

my co-workers often ask me if I want to borrow their rigs for the errands I run, but I laugh and tell them that I would much rather ride the KLX than a beat fullsize chevy ;D

So I had to tow a Volvo XC 90 to a transmission shop this morning, 100KM(60 Miles) from Bathurst. On the way I go, 1/4 of the way the speedo starts acting up, I can deal with that. Couple KMs later the Oil Pressure gauge goes around the loop, I can deal with that. 10 minutes later, Voltage gauge drops below 9.... >:( I can live with that, Truck is still ghoing just find....15kms to go...*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP* Truck's Overheating...Pull off and shut it down for a 10 mintues...FINALLY AFTER 2 HOURS I dropped off that Volvo.

On the way Back, I made the trip in 45 minutes... All gauges reading fine....Get back to Bathurst and go to a pick up. Put the bed out, and lower it...AS SOON...I mean as soon as the bed touch the ground

PPPPSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Blew the Main Hydrolic Line off the PTO, Hydro fluid 20 feet around the truck and the bed stuck on the ground......................................

Some polite words, call the boss he comes over and we manage to jack the bed up about a foot and I chained it up...drove it to the shop like that...

hahaa...thats good stuff, reminds me of what I do out in dutch...

our poor welder works about 100hrs a week to keep up with what we break, and we have a team of four mechanics working 80hrs a week each too.

no fun to be the one who was operating when a piece breaks though, the boss always gives you that look...

hopefully your truck is out of the shop soon.

I had it back in a couple hours, The heavy equipment shop usually passes our trucks in quick. It was fun to have the boss's 2003 Chev 3/4 ton with a 327 in it ;D MAN can that thing go haulling a focus on the wheel lift lol
Title: Re: Our Company Trucks...and a Nice tow I had

any idea what was causing your gauge issue?

not having accurate gauges could cost your company big $$

my biggest beef with our mechanics is the way they refuse to fix the gauges in our trucks, and act like its no big deal that the ONLY thing that works on any of them is either the tach or the speedo(never both, and never anything else)

if the drivers knew what the oil pressure was, or the water temp, or the air brake pressure or, or, or, then they would be able to stop the truck BEFORE it blew up and would cost much less to fix, but NO, apparently thats too much work... >:(

sorry to ramble on, but I am envious of a company that is responsible with their repairs(but I guess I should not be surprised, I do work over the edge of the earth where the water goes tumbling off into space)

its a GM...its the cluster it self... I told the boss and his response...Don't worry what the cluster tells you...When the piston comes out the motor then you worry lol. they've replaced the cluster in the service truck a few times already.

well, at least you heard that directly from him, so when it does push something through the hood, he cant get too mad.

nothing sucks worse than having a mechanic tell you something is ok, only to get yelled at by the boss when it fails.

the next truck is either an International or a Dodge, he hates GM's and Fords. The clutch blew not too long ago in my truck before I got it.

Go Dodge.

Please tell me your joking :P IH engines in farm machinery are indestructible. IH engines in trucks don't even come close to that :P!

The only problem with the IH powered fords.. was the ford part of it. a complete IH machine will be the best of everything. Dodge will meet its demise beside an IH. IMHO

fords are fords, end of story..
but cummins is ford owned too.
and IHI is ford in disguise, like macka said. they still use the powersmoke engines. DT466 is a DAMN good engine tho IMO. seems pretty tough.

dodge is...well...dodge.

and what would he rather have happen? the clutch be fine but the transmission explode? think of all the idiots (potentially) that drove your truck before you did. they could have rode the hell out of the clutch, slipped it into every gear, whatever... clutches are made to be sacrificed. anything can eat clutches. but, i would like to see you find a ford or a dodge that isnt cat powered that will hold a candle to the longevity of a duramax...

dad has 250k un touched - 06 duramax LBZ 6spd alli
uncle has 600k, but he has done some work to his, nothing major tho. - 03 or 4 Duramax LLY 5 spd alli

The guy that was working before me that had my truck I hate to say this but is a VW Owner, Hes got a MK4 Jetta with a HUGE ASS Spoiler on it. He drove my truck like he droves his Jetta GAS, rev rev rev and pull the clutch out,.

My Ttruck you don't rev unless your on a hill, you pull the clutch out and she goes becayse of the gearing and torque.

there are the problems, the kid was used to driving a ricer im sure... a diesel is far from a ricer. lol. he probably wound that thing out (your truck) to atleast 3500 in every gear. and probably dumped the clutch into the next gear. 99% of the time, no matter what im driving, i use the clutch in first, then thats it usually. i use the gas pedal to down shift unless its an emergency.

when you drive a 4000 lb toyota for 60k miles with a slipping clutch, you tend to get used to shifting with no clutch.

I leanrt how to drive "Trucls" on a Mack EZ 460 with the Clutch shot, You could start it with the clutch and the truck wouldn't move but once you pull it out the clutch wouldn't work again. My brother use to use it for hauling wood chips and I learnt to drive grossing over 100,000lbs with it. lol. Trucker is in my Blood :P

And yes he is a ricer and use to rev my truck to the tits all the time.

Just to add a little fuel to the fire here... 2001 F250 still going hard and strong at 200k, a quarter of that was put on in the first two years of back and forth commutes from SC to NY pulling a 35' box trailer full of tools. Or a Bobcat.

The 7.3 has devoured a starter in that time, eaten @ 135k miles (Ford replaced it, no charge), and there was a problem with the left bank's wiring harness @ 40k (also replaced under warranty). It ate two sets of batteries in very short order because the numb-nuts that installed them shorted one of them out on install and didn't catch it... and then did it again when they were brought in under warranty.

The body is solid, the transmission is still shifting great, and it's only now begun to develop a front end bounce at certain speeds. We have some rack time for replacing shocks, tie rod ends and bushings on all four corners in her future. We just did the pads and rotors all the way around to fix two warped rotors.

Compared to how the GM 1500 it replaced survived the abuse of the job... Moby Dick has been the very picture of reliability and serviceability. And yet, it's "a Ford," so it shouldn't be anything remotely like that, right?

I think all three of the "Big 3" trucks can do the work. I think that they all at some point had some problem or another, balanced out by some stellar feature, and it's this perception that has stuck hard and fast in folks' minds (like a certain GM diesel fiasco of rushed development and incomplete training...).

im not saying that fords are incapable of going long distances un touched, because anything is capable. it just needs to be properly maintained.

and in my life, i havent seen many fords live long lifes. my brothers 05 ford F250 is on its fifteenth transmission, 4th set of heads, 6th turbo, few different intercooler boots and a long list of other small things.

but my dad has a old ford 6.9 idi up in alaska at the fish camp, and it will not die. WILL NOT... and it gets basically no maintenance. lol

its not whether ford, dodge or gm is better... They are equal.. so long as you are talking pretty much pre-1992 :P

anything new from any company sucks the big one. Even Volkswagen.. pathetic some of the quality issues you hear coming from vw these days.. things ain't like they used to be.

Yeah Kev those old 6.9's are un KILLABLE. had one that went forever on 50/50 water oil mix.. finally started to take a bearing out after like 6-7 years? it was insane..

that right there ^ ^ ^  the pre 92 thing. nail on the head there Jeremy... with everything, ford, chevy, dodge, gas or diesel. vehicles just started being cheaper and harder to work on.
