the turbo on my 1.6 TD is shafted and i'm looking for a cheap replacement but is there any other makes or models of cars i could use the turbo from? i'd like to 'upgrade' at the same time as well, can't think which my turbo is off the top of my head but its a pritty small one so if any one could suggest a car i could get a fairly big turbo from that would be great. i can get a garret T4 from a petrol turbo but i'm guessing that this would be unsuitable for a diesel?
-
Can a 1.6 even adequately spool a T4? I think you will have to rev the engine really high to get the power from a turbo that big.
a T3 would be a better match for you, from what I've read.
-
It comes down to where you want your power. Off the line or in the upper rpm range (2750+)
-
i only mentioned the T4 because it would be free, didn't think there would be much chance of it being any good for my engine after seeing how big it is.
does any one know what other cars the T3 (or some thing like it) came on so i know what cars to look for being broken on the net or in scrap yards?
-
like 99% of turbo cars in the 80's and 90's came with a T3. probably the most plentiful and common turbo on the face of the earth. put a Mercedes 300TD turbo on there. they are pretty close to the same as the t3 we already have, but they flow more but have a worse spool time.

not according to ebay.co.uk unfortunately and most of the used garrets on ebay just say what car they are off and have very little details on them, so if i have an idea which car i'm looking for i have more of an idea if its worth ending a message to get more details about it.

Drop a t3 or kkk k24 in her.

andy2 said a merc 300 turbo is a suitable performance turbo for our engines. its got a bit more lag than a standard T3, but it has quite a bit more flow. it has alot bigger compressor wheel in it than our turbos do, thats where the extra lag comes from. it has a bigger inlet and outlet tho, so you will need different hoses to hook it up.
-
If you are in the UK you have more options avail to you. How about a gt1749va or 1749vb and a 1.9 head on top with a 1Y non egr manifold? Zoom zoom!

What is actualy wrong with your turbo? On my original t3 the wastegate cannister was shot and since there aren't any parts for these things I got a rebuilt turbo with a Stage 1 upgrade which was a bigger compressor wheel. It was a big mistake and although the turbo is actualy OK I believe, it would require the fuel to be turned up too high to make any boost. I never saw over 5 psi. out of it. I put the old original t3 back on after I lapped the valve and did away with the wastegate altogether since I found out on here you really don't need the thing anyway since it rarely sees over 10 psi. and it's twice the turbo the bigger one is. I'd stay stock unless you are willing to put up with a lot of smoke and lousy mileage ;)

the fan blades keep hitting the housing when it comes on boost. i think the pump has been messed about with any way because there is already a lot of black smoke and poor mileage.
-
the compressor hits the housing? just send yours off to get re built. or re bearing it your self.

how much are bearings for them and where would i get them from?
i've just had a look and my turbo is a KKK K24, are these any good? what kinda psi can they boost too? i was hoping to run around 30 psi once i've done a few things too the engine, would this be achievable with a K24?
-
30 psi is a bit too high for the k24. You should look at a larger turbo if you want to run that high.
-
I hit 20psi with my k24 on stock fueling and plugged waste gate.
-
searched on ebay uk and can't find any rebuild kits for the K24, also would i need to get it balanced after replacing the bearings?
-
20-25 is all the more you would really want to run for any period of time on a K24. get on ebay and get a rebuild kit for that thing, they are really cheap.

looked on ebay but the only KKK ones on there are for K14 ad K16 (i think it was them two any way) but nothing for a K24, but even so i've been told that if i rebuilt it myself i would need to get it all balance professionally?

I guess you missed this... (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Golf-Turbo-K24-MK1-MK2-1-6td-CY-53249706082-Rabbit_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em20Q2el1116QQhashZitem1c066c9de8QQitemZ120366865896QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories)
i said cheap haha
i'm not looking at spending any thing near that, that's why i'm trying to find out what cars i could pull a used one from ;)
-
i've found a garret turbo that's nice and cheap, apparently its from an AAZ but not sure if it would be any good for my engine, the info i have for it is
VW028145703B
655577-1
VJ9828F
after looking that up it came up with TB026 not sure if that is a model number? could any one tell me any more about this? if any one knows any thing about this kind of turbo could they say what kind of boost it could handle?
cheers for any help 8)
