When Piston Meets Head!!!!I pulled the rest of the donor 1.9 apart tonight to see how bad piston #1 really is....brace yourself, the next few pictures are quite graphic....please advise small children and weak stomached women to leave the room :lol:
I've seen waterslides at the amusement park strighter than that con rod!!!!
Now on to the serious question:
I noticed that the crankshaft seems to have a bit of wear under main cap #2 (seen below) and on the corresponding journal of the crank. Should I have it polished and try to alleviate that roughness? My thought is
yes.

I recently took a crank like that in to my machinist, and they hot tanked it to remove the bearing material, and it came out sparkling clean. I felt very lucky
I don't think the hot tank can do much for that rod... Possibly future use as 'yard art'. I made my MiniVan $1400 tranny rebuild into a nice kitty Cat for 'the wife' to keep in her flower garden. I will be making a few more 'objects of art' :wink: from VW parts. She's been needing some 'diquised' sprinkers.

well, I'm not all that bummed out. I like the look of the piston and rod so it will hang on my VW wall of death...I seem to collect certain parts
(a TDI tensioner that is bent all to heck, my 1.6TD block with a rod coming out the side, a couple nasty timing belts, etc.)
I am looking forward to the rebuild.
Dr. D., did you say you have access to some fairily priced 1.9 TD parts? It's hard to source them in the US. I am likely going to need one piston and rod, a full set of rings, and bearings (or are the bearings the same in the 1.9 and 1.6?)
That's a good thought though, how much different is the lower end of the 1.6 and the 1.9? Should I get a later Bentley just to cover the 1.9 engine?

Rings and bearings are the same as the 1Z or AHU TDI's so you should have no trouble sourcing them. The gaskets and other "soft" parts might be a bit harder to find. Altrom carries most parts at reasonable prices. They don't deal directly with the public but they have distibuters in the US, check thier website at
