Really Smokey Idle
« on: July 30, 2007, 06:54:58 pm »
I finally got all the parts in and my Caddy is now back to making smoke, to much smoke in truth. Head was pulled and checked out, injectors cleaned and checked out by a local shop. The VE was gone through with new O-rings and seals throughout and bench tested. Fuel was turned up by the shop to about 10% over stock to compensate for the turbo on this engine (aftermarket kit on a NA motor).

Took forever to get the motor to crank, which was expected, but here's my quandry, this thing smokes more than my Dodge at idle, much heavier than a haze, but not quite a cloud. You can see through the smoke..until the engine is given throttle, then it will belch a nice thick cloud of black smoke and stay revved a bit AFTER letting of the go lever.

I have checked timing via the belt, all is good there, do not have the tool to check internal pump timing, going to see about borrowing one tomorrow. My first thought was the fuel being turned up to far, turned it down almost a full turn, better, but still not clear.

That's as far as I could get this evening before the gnats and dark ran me back inside, any thoughts on what else to check/adjust??

Does it smoke once the boost kicks in?

Do you have an EGT setup installed?

How exactly did the shop "clean" the injectors?

Have not driven it so no idea on the boost cleaning it up or not, but from what I have seen it's rather doubtful.

No EGT gauge yet, couldn't get a fitting to mount in the manifold in time (it's on the to do list though)

No idea how they cleaned them, I would assume an ultrasonic bath.

My suggestion: don't waste any more time until you've made sure the timing is bang on with a dial gauge.

The belt will get you about 10% of the way.... the rest takes a gauge and is a game of thousandths of an inch.

As per the gauge borrowed from the local injection shop the timing is now set at 0.89 with the pump rotated as far towards the motor as it will go. The smoke has cleared somewhat but is still present. Didn't have much time to really play with the fuel screw or adjust on the pump more today but will do so tomorrow and see what happens.

0.89mm?

Take the belt off and rotate the pump pulley one tooth, you should have it set at about 1.00 mm

Make sure you loosen and tighten all the fuel injector lines after moving the pump or they will all crack

I was to stuupid to do that yesterday, but will get the gauge back and reset it and see what happens.

On a side note, I have read about bubbles in the fuel lines causing some of this and can understand it using just the supply pump in the IP. Is it much of an issue when using a pusher pump to supply the IP??

It's usally not as much of a problem with a pusher pump, make sure it is a low PSI model though
